The biggest challenge law firms face is the misalignment of leadership. Conflict at the partner level stems from distrust, emotionality, poor communication, divergent views of success, management styles, and compensation concerns. I see this A LOT in small to mid-sized firms and it is exacerbated by the avoidance of confrontation. To be clear, most of these partners actually enjoy great relationships and longstanding friendships. But the conflict is never personal. It's professional, and it's the enemy of profitability. Some structured communication in a facilitated discussion goes a very long way, and #lawfirms in growth mode have much to gain from intentional conversations. Emotional intelligence—especially at the leadership level—helps create a supportive, resilient firm culture.
