As Placer County's team strategizes mitigating wildfire hazard across its 650,000 forested acres, they need to know where to start. Our platform helped identify projects across an initial 20,000 acres that would tackle the highest hazard – a more manageable starting point! Check out our latest news, and learn how Placer's team plans to protect their community's most at-risk critical assets: https://lnkd.in/eRZggTsd Read the press release: https://lnkd.in/eHFhJ3WZ

Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) is taking a community led approach to wildfire protection. Since 2022, the Nation has participated in FireSmart with support from Union of BC Municipalities, Indigenous Services Canada, First Nation Emergency Services Society, Emergency Management and Climate Readiness, Nch’kay Development, BA Blackwell (and many others!) to reduce wildfire risk, enhance resilience and mitigate impacts to homes, infrastructure, and areas of importance.
We all have a role to play in protecting our homes and communities from wildfires. Since 2022, the Squamish Nation has participated in FireSmart, an initiative that supports communities to reduce impacts to their homes, infrastructure, and areas of importance. The FireSmart team helps to protect our communities at risk of forest fires by pruning trees, clearing out dead vegetation, creating firebreaks, and more. Wildfires are becoming more frequent and severe, threatening our #CAStateParks and communities. Prop 4 will fund proven wildfire prevention strategies, like the efforts needed after 97% of Big Basin Redwoods burned in 2020. With over 2 million acres recently burned, it's clear: we must act now. Prop 4 is our chance to build resilience in our parks and protect them for future generations. That's why we're voting YES on Prop 4 — because protecting #California is a responsibility we all share. 👉 Pledge to vote YES on Prop 4: https://lnkd.in/ghVJjsys #YesonProp4

Since publishing v1 of the Greater Hobart Bushfire Exposure Index (https://bit.ly/3Y4CLtu), we have made significant advancements in our project to "Anticipate and Monitor the Impact of Bushfires in Greater Hobart." This comprehensive initiative, part of the "Preparing Australian Communities - Local Stream," is funded by the National Emergency Management Agency and focuses on the vulnerable areas of GLENORCHY CITY COUNCIL, City of Hobart and Kingborough Council. Our ongoing work includes improvements to both the severity and exposure indices, incorporating sophisticated semi-automated tools and a dedicated web platform. As we work towards v2 of the Bushfire Exposure Index, our goal remains clear: to fortify the long-term preparedness of local governments and residents, fostering a culture of resilience and proactive response in the face of increasing fire dangers. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to refine our tools to protect Greater Hobart. #Wildfire #Bushfire #ClimateTech #EmergencyManagement

Privileged to co-author this Prop 4 op-ed with Laura Engeman. California has made significant strides and meaningful investments to reduce wildfire impacts. Now is not the time to reduce funding for community risk reduction activities like home hardening and defensible space; fuels mitigation work around at-risk communities; forest health treatments like prescribed fire to create fire adapted landscapes; and new technologies to help us move further faster. The long-term economic impacts of wildfire to small and large businesses, local communities, and state and federal budgets can easily exceed this downpayment if investments in wildfire resiliency are not continued. https://lnkd.in/gpRG7ckJ Anukool Lakhina Matt Weiner Dr. Waleed S, "Lee" Haddad. In his latest article, FM's CSO, Lou Gritzo, dives deep into the evolving nature of wildfires. While wildfires are a natural part of our ecosystem, their impact on communities has grown. With expanding development and extended wildfire seasons, we're facing events that are no longer just "wildland fires" but massive conflagrations threatening lives, homes, and businesses. Current policies and mitigation strategies aren't enough to protect the vast regions now considered high fire risk. To effectively manage this challenge, we need better tools for critical decision-makers — land use planners, building code officials, and wildland managers — who are crucial in mitigating this growing risk. Dr. Gritzo advocates for a well-designed public-private partnership, with the combustion research community playing a central role in developing innovative solutions. 👉 Read his article to learn more about protecting our communities from the increasing wildfire threat. http://ms.spr.ly/6046mKVmK

Join SBC in voting Yes on Prop 4. This important bond will help prevent wildfire, provide clean drinking water, and protect California. With the election already underway (check the mailbox for your ballot!), now is the time to vote YES on Proposition 4 to prevent wildfires and protect California’s unique natural lands and water sources. For more than two years, SBC’s Government Affairs team and our partners have worked with the drafters of this ballot initiative to ensure that it delivers on the priorities and needs of the Sierra Nevada region. Prop 4 would make investments now to stave off disaster in the years ahead. It would front-load projects such as brush-clearing, forest restoration, and controlled burns that can help contain future wildfires before they explode into uncontrolled disasters. Prop 4 also contains funding to protect natural lands, build clean energy infrastructure, create parks & green space, and help small and medium farms conserve water and improve soil health.
