🌊Throughout October, UNIDO has been delivering impactful entrepreneurial and digital capacity building sessions across the #SADC region for #PROFISHBLUE, using #HP LIFE from the HP Foundation. These sessions empower Business Development Institutions (BDIs) to strengthen Africa's #BlueEconomy through sustainable aquaculture, enhancing #FoodSecurity, creating jobs, and boosting regional trade. Chicoa Fish Farm, a growing aquaculture leader in Mozambique on Lake Cahora Bassa, supports small-scale farmers by providing high-quality fingerlings, accessible feed, and hands-on training. Chicoa also harvests and distributes premium tilapia — a sustainable, cost-efficient protein source — to help address Africa’s protein deficit. Together with Lake Harvest Aquaculture (Zimbabwe) and Kariba Harvest Ltd (Zambia), Mvuvi is fostering a resilient aquaculture sector across the region. #SustainableDevelopment #Aquaculture #MvuviNetwork #FoodSystems

The growing scarcity of essential feed ingredients demands an urgent and transformative shift in aquaculture practices across Africa. Outdated feeding protocols are no longer sustainable. It is imperative to accurately determine and meet the true nutrient requirements of economically significant fish species by utilizing raw materials that are not only digestible but also highly bioavailable. Yet, the reality on the ground tells a different story. Fish species requiring 32% crude protein (CP) are often fed diets with 35 - 38%, while those needing 38% CP are being overfed with 42%. This persistent overloading of nutrients in fish feeds represents a gross mismanagement of scarce resources contributimg to the high cost of fish feeds. Worse still, it directly contributes to high farm operations cost, environmental degradation, fostering conditions that accelerate fish disease outbreaks and destabilize aquatic ecosystems. To sustain aquaculture, safeguard livelihoods, and protect our planet, we must urgently abandon these wasteful practices. Innovation and precision in feed formulation are non-negotiable. The cost of inaction is steep and unforgiving. As Nigeria and other African countries prepare for heavy investment in cage culture systems: raising fish on open waters, the pressing question remains: how much longer can we ignore these consequences before they irreversibly compromise the aquaculture industry, devastate livelihoods, and jeopardize the prosperity of future generations? Fishmeal, a vital protein source in aquaculture, has seen a sharp price increase in recent years, driven by a combination of global challenges: 🌦️ Climate Change & El Niño: Disruptions in anchovy fishing in Peru, the world's largest fishmeal producer, have tightened supply. 🌍 Rising Demand: The growing need for fish products and animal feed intensifies resource pressure. 📜 Regulations: Sustainability efforts limit overfishing and reduce raw material availability. 🚢 Production Costs: Higher energy prices and supply chain disruptions add to the burden. Alternative proteins are gaining traction to ensure sustainability and affordability. While insect-based and microalgae-based feeds are promising, plant-based solutions like Lemna (duckweed) are emerging as game-changers. Lemna offers high protein content, rapid growth, and environmental benefits, making it a viable replacement for traditional fishmeal. The future of aquaculture depends on innovation, collaboration, and sustainable protein sources. LemaPro is here to take part and shape the future of aquaculture feeding 🌱 What’s your take on Lemna and other plant-based proteins in aquaculture?
