Hurricane Helene barreled through western North Carolina in September 2024, proving that unprecedented disasters can destroy communities, take lives and wipe out vital lifelines in a matter of hours while leaving long lasting impacts. Preparing for disasters like Hurricane Helene on “blue-sky” days, or days where no disaster is imminent or on the horizon, plays a critical role in disaster recovery and enhances resiliency in our region. The destruction across the Southeast caused by Hurricane Helene is catastrophic and it will be a long time before we fully understand its toll. We are hearing from partners about the extent of the damage to trail communities across Southern Appalachia and western Florida and expect the long-term implications for these small towns and rural economies will be significant. Our hearts are with everyone who has experienced such devastating loss because of this storm. ***CAUTION, EMERGENCY MANAGER DORK MODE*** I reviewed a situation report yesterday by Mercy Chefs for #HurricaneBeryl response. They are serving in multiple islands of the #Caribbean and in the City of Houston and across Harris County, Texas. So far, 65,000 meals + in Texas. A donated value of over $650,000 just in meals alone. (value averaged for federal meal rate) This is on top of countless disasters they have responded to across the country this year and it simply amazes me and reminds me to be thankful to those who support them financially as well as by volunteering. As an emergency manager it is easy to take for granted the work of nonprofits and imagine endless funding supply and everything comes for free. The truth is, for many nonprofits, donor fatigue and overwhelming seasons of disaster response can have a devastating impact on their ability to respond to the next disaster. While they don't charge for their service, there are avenues that #EmergencyManagement can pursue to help sustain their response. Unfortunately, many local emergency managers either aren't aware of the funding through Public Assistance, Cat B or they report to States and regions that discourage it under the guise of "how dare they ask for reimbursement." (this is more often the rule than the exception) International Association of Emergency Managers , National Emergency Management Association To build your local mass care capability, you MUST review the PAPPG guidance (Version 5 coming soon) to help you and your Finance Admin team leverage Cat B to ensure your local response isn't contingent on how a disaster season has impacted your reliable partners. Whether a local expense or a reimbursable one, you will never regret supporting nonprofits that are caring for your residents. Usually people having water and food is the last thing on your radar, but the first thing to get you hear at your after-action. If you need help digesting this, feel free to reach out to Rule One Consulting LLC at support@ruleoneconsulting.com where our consultants can help you navigate it. "Essential lessons remain consistent while new individuals continue to learn them." ~no formal attribution available Mass Care is often wrought with mistakes and "wish I would have known that" but rest assured, in the words of #BareNakedLadies Song, "Its All Been Done" Thanks to ALL the nonprofits AND their donors for carrying this burden for communities that desperately need your support.
#HurricaneBeryl made history as the largest hurricane to hit the Atlantic Ocean this early in the hurricane season. Violent winds struck the Windward Islands, causing what news outlets are calling “Armageddon-like” devastation across the #Caribbean. Earlier this week, Beryl made landfall in #Texas, causing extensive damage and leaving over 2.7 million customers without power. Mercy Chefs has deployed to Carriacou, #Grenada, and #Houston, TX, to bring hand-crafted, chef-prepared meals to hurricane victims who are starting to rebuild their lives. #ClimateAction of the day: Urge Congress to get back in session and pass emergency funding for Hurricane Helene relief! Hurricane Helene has devastated communities across the southeastern United States, and Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee all face an uphill battle on the road to recovery. These areas will not be able to rebuild -- and do so with resilience in mind -- without financial support. And now Hurricane Milton is on its way and expected to hit as a powerful Category 5 storm. Even if the current fund can support relief efforts for Helene, more funding will be needed as we proceed through hurricane season. It is time for Congress to get back in session and give these communities the support they need. Urge Congress to act: https://lnkd.in/g67kEJrt #HurricaneHelene #DisasterRelief #ClimateAdvocacy #TakeClimateAction #HurricaneMilton

Hurricane Beryl is making history as the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record, devastating the Caribbean and now impacting Texas and Louisiana. Our disaster team is currently monitoring the storm and assessing needs. Hurricane Beryl hit southern Texas as a Category 1 storm on Monday, causing power outages for over 2.5 million homes and resulting in at least 8 fatalities in Texas and Louisiana. Now a tropical depression, it has caused flooding, downed power lines, and uprooted trees. As it moves toward the Midwest, it threatens more flooding and tornadoes. We are in communication with local authorities as they determine what is needed. As we standby, gaining the support of corporate and community partners like you can help us focus on what we do best if we're called to deploy: providing expert leadership in volunteer and disaster relief operations to help impacted homeowners recover quickly and safely. We need corporate partners to help mobilize employee volunteers and provide financial resources when disasters like Hurricane Beryl strike. Our services are free to homeowners and focus on underserved and under-resourced communities, which requires strong corporate and community support. Your assistance can make a critical difference. Let's discuss how your company can help rebuild homes and communities after a disaster. HURRICANE HELENE: TEN DAYS IN - World Vision is Responding Across Multiple States Ten days after Hurricane Helene made landfall in the U.S. as the second deadliest storm to hit the U.S. this century, World Vision USA response teams are still on the ground working with partners to address the most urgent needs. In North Carolina and other areas, catastrophic flooding has destroyed many roads and bridges, cutting off communities without basic supplies like food and clean water. Communication has also been very challenging for the region, as many cell towers are down. Clean water is in high demand due to damage to local water towers, which may take weeks to repair. Communities like Adren, NC, are in desperate need of generators, cell chargers, and basic supplies to support their recovery. The devastation left by Hurricane Helene is heart-wrenching, and it’s especially difficult being here, in my own backyard, seeing the impact on the North Carolina mountains and foothills. Our CAT (Catastrophe) team has boots on the ground, working tirelessly to assist in recovery efforts. We're heartbroken by the destruction and especially the lives lost, but determined to stand by our clients and communities in this difficult time. I’m incredibly proud of the insurance companies we partner with, who are showing such dedication and resilience. They're working around the clock to ensure that their clients receive the support they need as quickly as possible. It’s a reminder that, no matter where we are, we are all touched by disasters like these—but together, we’re stronger. FEI is committed to helping every step of the way. We’re here, and we’re ready to help rebuild what was lost. Stay safe, stay strong, and know that we stand with you. 🙏 ❤️ 💪 #FEIStrong #HurricaneHelene #CATResponse #BootsOnTheGround #NCStrong #DisasterRecovery #CommunitySupport #InsuranceRecovery #WeStandTogether #ResilientCommunities #RebuildingHope #NorthCarolinaRecovery #ClientFocused #RecoveryAndRelief #HereToHelp

🌀 As Hurricane Debby's impact continues to be felt, with over 19,000 claims filed already, the repercussions are far-reaching and urgent. 🏠 The acceptance of applications by Florida Realtors DRF until Feb. 5, 2025, presents a timely opportunity for those affected to seek assistance and rebuild their lives. 🌟 My prediction for the aftermath of Hurricane Debby is that it will catalyze a strong sense of community resilience and support in Taylor County. 🔍 This disaster has highlighted the importance of emergency preparedness and the need for proactive measures to mitigate future risks. 💪 I believe that the recovery efforts following this catastrophe will showcase the strength and unity of the affected communities as they come together to rebuild and restore normalcy. 🛠️ The resilience and determination of the people impacted by Hurricane Debby will pave the way for a brighter future and inspire others facing similar challenges. Let's stand together, lend a helping hand where we can, and show the true spirit of humanity in times of need. #HurricaneDebby #CommunityResilience #RecoveryEfforts
