West African Resources’ Post

As part of our Livelihood Restoration Program, our poultry farming initiative has positively impacted the lives of 40 households in villages affected by the Sanbrado Gold Operation. The objective of this pilot project is to contribute to food security by generating income for affected families. With support from CIDS-Burkina (Centre d'Initiative pour le Développement Solidaire), participants were trained and provided with essential resources. 🐔 Key Achievements ✨ • 240 birds distributed to 40 beneficiaries in 2022. • Poultry population growth: From 240 to 2,139 birds in 16 months! • 470 chickens sold, generating approximately 1,276,050 CFA of revenue for households. • The project enhances nutrition, boosts food security, generates income, and provides financial relief for families. • Income from poultry sales helps cover a wide range of family expenses, including food, clothing, agricultural feed, school supplies, healthcare and much more.

I am sure one can do better than this. Posted at around the same time announcing excellent exploration results. And you retaining your LTO in the country while many others were not so lucky. Mining companies really need to rethink CSR, in Africa and elsewhere. Sorry to pick on you first, but we need to think transformation, doing life changing things for the communities we operate in. Not glossy PR focused CSR which is a nice term for the handouts that is a rounding error for most companies. Especially those with billion dollar market caps. Where is the real empowerment and meaningful economic participation to build communities that can sustain themselves years after we have gone? Why don’t we replace CSR with RESE- real economic and social empowerment? For pointers look at what Makor is doing elsewhere in Africa, or Nornickel for indigenous communities in the Artic.
