Binckhorst The Hague https://lnkd.in/gtP3prJh Through a framework for the public space and urbanisation, development of the area can be realised in different phases. With every step, greening and enhancing the public space goes hand in hand with urbanisation. Thus, urbanisation develops along with greenery within Binckhorst.

Excited to share my latest article in the International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage TICCIH - Official Page Bulletin (Q4 2024) exploring the transformation and contested heritage of Sydney's Darling Harbour. The piece examines how this historic maritime-industrial precinct, Australia's first centre of commerce, faced significant redevelopment pressures in the 1980s. The story of Darling Harbour serves as an important case study of how cities grapple with their industrial past and raises critical questions about urban heritage conservation in the face of economic development pressures. The full article, "Rediscovering the Forgotten: The Industrial Identity of Sydney's Darling Harbour", is attached. #IndustrialHeritage #UrbanDevelopment #Sydney #Conservation #TICCIH #UrbanHistory

Witness the Western Cape's dance between history and modernity. The argument over balancing the needs of modern housing and business with preserving our beloved historic structures is becoming more heated as the need for infrastructure grows 🏗 Heritage Western Cape is essential in preserving a variety of cultural assets that are emblematic of our region's essence. Their efforts guarantee that these assets, which range from large monuments to historic locations, stay active and significant for everyone who follows. But as our cities get bigger, so does the demand for modern infrastructure. Adaptive reuse is emerging as a sustainable hero, converting old buildings into functional, contemporary spaces while preserving their historic character. This practice not only supports economic growth but also maintains cultural integrity, proving that progress and preservation can coexist harmoniously 🔄💼. Today, the Western Cape is witnessing this transformation firsthand. Ancient buildings are reimagined into bustling commercial zones and cosy living spaces, cleverly blending old charm with new opportunities . This challenge isn't unique to our region but is part of a global dialogue on valuing our past while constructing our future. Let's stay engaged and innovative as we navigate this path together! #HeritageConservation #SustainableDevelopment #WesternCape #AdaptiveReuse #UrbanDevelopment

In urban areas, analysis of the social, environmental and economic effects of green spaces on urban quality of life shows that urban green spaces are a fundamental element in urban planning. Ecologically speaking, trees reduce heat by providing shade, creating a mild climate and producing oxygen. Urban green spaces can act as living environments for animal and plant species, helping to maintain biodiversity in urban areas. They also purify the air by absorbing a large quantity of pollutants. From an architectural standpoint, trees act as acoustic insulators, reducing the perception of noise from outside, reducing noise pollution and protecting houses from gusty winds. On a psychological level, urban green spaces can contribute to an improved state of mind by facilitating physical activity. On a social level, they can improve the aesthetic quality of the city and bring city-dwellers into direct contact with each other. It was a pleasure for me to have taken part in the publication as second author of an article in which we reflect together with the population of Bukavu on the mechanism of restoration of green spaces, with Professor Doctor Legrand Cirimwami and Mr Clérisse Casinga. It's only my first experience, but as a young researcher, it's something that motivates me enormously. Good news 📢 A historic industrial range next to a Scheduled medieval priory was set for demolition. Thanks to concerns raised by the CBA and other amenity societies, The Victorian Society and SPAB, new plans will now save these buildings and convert them into flats. 🏘️ Adaptive reuse of old buildings isn’t just about advocating for heritage — it’s also a sustainable choice! By repurposing these structures, we retain their embodied carbon, significantly reducing the environmental impact compared to demolition and new construction. We’ll stay involved to help develop the best possible outcome! Housing is community design, and there is an urgent need to bring policy and community together. How can we move from resistance to possibility through community agency? Looking forward to participating in and learning about processes that could enable this.

The Second Annual Duda Forum on Historic Preservation and Sustainable Development was in San Antonio, Texas, last weekend, focusing on historic preservation and integrating new construction in historic settings. With one of Texas' most historic cities as the backdrop, participants examined a wide range of topics about designing new buildings in historic districts--sustainability, climate change, housing affordability, and new traditional architecture. Discussions spanned federal to local levels with keynote Sara C. Bronin, chair of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, followed by speakers from local officials and advocates, including professors Steven Semes and Paul Kapp. This event was sponsored by the Michael Christopher Duda Center, the Texas Historical Foundation, the The Conservation Society of San Antonio, and the City of San Antonio Office of Historic Preservation, through continued collaborate to support our shared missions.
