Is Procurement rewarded with fair bonuses that reflect their role in an organisation? It has been a topic of great debate for some time but this was put into context again yesterday when speaking to a Procurement Director who had personally delivered over £10 million in savings in the last year and helped contribute significant revenue growth and yet only received a nominal bonus based on a percentage of his basic salary. Should companies look at rewarding Procurement based on company profit/ EBIDTA or on savings they have made? Or should the focus be on supplier or stakeholder feedback or perhaps just higher bonuses? A revamp of how you incentivise Procurement teams could be critical for both retaining and attracting talent as well as growing the Procurement profession in the future. What are your thoughts?

Networking is underrated. Early in my career, I worked as a sales consultant for a phone retailer and was trained for the role in the company’s academy. Four years down the line, after I had worked my way up to General Manager, one of my trainers had sent her son to our store to buy a phone. He, however, couldn’t get his hands on this particular model without a contract. When she reached out to me for help, I called our store staff and had them sell him the phone. She later called to thank me and congratulate me on a ‘GM of the Year’ award I had won, and somewhere during our conversation, I mentioned in passing that I would love to live and work in the Middle East. Fast forward a few years later, she took on a role as the head of recruitment for a firm in the Middle East, and guess who she called when a role opened up? The simple act of being 'nice' and building a relationship with my sales trainer changed the trajectory of my life and career. Networking is a skill that will always benefit you. Having a group of people who know and trust your capabilities is an asset that every professional must have.
