10th World Water Forum, one of the key arenas for global #watergovernance, is in full swing in Bali this week. Highlights for GOVAQUA: 🤝 EU launches a new initiative supporting peer-learning between lake and river basin organisations with International Network of Basin Organisations, hosted by the GOVAQUA partner International Office for Water. 💧 EU announces its joining of the #FreshWaterChallenge, a collective action initiative with an aim to restore 300,000 km of degraded rivers and 350 million hectares of degraded wetlands by 2030 worldwide. GOVAQUA studies good practices of aligning public, private and civil society efforts and targets in collective action. 📖 OECD Environment "Handbook of What Works - Solutions for the Local Implementation of the OECD Principles on Water Governance" provides a highly interesting compendium of evolving practices, intended to support and inspire water governance decision makers around the world. GOVAQUA joins the effort and is currently working on: 🔎 Developing a water governance self-assessment tool tailored to sub-national settings 💡 Building a repository of tried, tested and validated innovative water governance instruments, approaches and arrangements that advance sustainable and equitable water use 🌌 Formulating pathways and action perspectives relevant for different levels of water governance across sectors and regions in Europe 🌱 The Handbook presents a case study of the multi-stakeholder collaboration at the heart of the Archipelago Sea Basin Programme in Finland. GOVAQUA partner Finnish Environment Institute supports Varsinais-Suomen ELY-keskus in the Programme implementation via a #LivingLab process in 2024-2026 focusing on #waterstewardship in food value chain and #impactinvestments, and develops governance assessment tools for monitoring and evaluation.

World Water Day 2024 ( 💦 celebrated on March 22) highlighted the theme "Leveraging Water for Peace", emphasizing the role of water as a catalyst for peacebuilding and conflict resolution. This theme underscored the importance of sustainable water management practices in fostering cooperation and harmony among communities and nations, particularly in regions where water scarcity and competition over water resources may contribute to tensions. The scope of the Water Guidance covers water-related information to be included in the mainstream report with a focus on water 1️⃣ Governance 2️⃣ policies, strategies, and targets and related management 3️⃣ risks and opportunities 4️⃣ sources of environmental impact 5️⃣ Performance and comparative analysis 6️⃣ outlook Additionally, this Guidance focuses on the quantity and quality of freshwater resources (both surface and groundwater). Preliminary reporting elements addressing issues regarding biodiversity and aquatic (fresh- and non-freshwater) ecosystem loss and degradation are also provided. Over 300 river basins and lakes around the world cross national borders. Countries that share these water sources must build a cooperative relationship to ensure peace, water security, economic development, and environmental preservation. However, the United Nations noted that in 2022, around 60% of transboundary river basins lack cooperative arrangements. Meanwhile, the existing treaties were considered weak in implementation. The IUCN has worked to strengthen water governance through the BRIDGE initiative. What is water governance, and how does the BRIDGE initiative support it? The role of environmental monitors may be misconstrued as having a political, business, or even personal agenda, particularly when they lack understanding of the necessary procedures and legal requirements that validate their work. It is essential to recognize that the primary purpose of environmental monitors is to ensure the protection and preservation of natural resources. Their work is guided by scientific principles and regulatory frameworks designed to safeguard the environment for current and future generations. By fostering transparency and open communication, environmental monitors can build trust within communities and demonstrate their commitment to unbiased and accurate reporting. Education and outreach are key components in dispelling misconceptions, empowering citizens with knowledge about environmental issues, and encouraging a collaborative approach to achieving sustainability goals. Watch this panel discussion hosted by Unique Zimuto on the Game Changer show - Heart and Soul Tv - for first-hand accounts of environmental monitors' experiences. The discussion details the challenges, including regulatory hurdles they face and how collaboration with government and other stakeholders has made them more efficient. https://lnkd.in/d5vuDip6

OPINION: Celebrating #WorldWaterDay: Water for Peace World Water Day is a global celebration of the role of water as a shared resource. It is held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. It is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis, in support of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030. The theme this year is ‘Water for Peace’, which is obviously a noble cause. We know that water is also an economic enabler, so is it true to say that asymmetrical access to water can be a driver of conflict – the opposite of peace? Water is seldom a driver of conflict between sovereign states, simply because governments generally have a range of remedies that logically avoid the unnecessary disruption of war. Consequently, there is limited empirical evidence of water as a primary cause of war. Where evidence does exist, it tends to be from the ancient world, predating dispute resolution mechanisms that are now embedded in international treaties between governments sharing a river or a lake, writes Prof Anthony Turton, a water expert from the University of the Free State (UFS) Centre for Environmental Management. We’re proud to support a partnership project that puts nature and water recovery at the heart of a new model for the water industry. The SSWAN (Sustainable Solutions for Water and Nature) coalition aims to address the urgent need for regulatory reform. It illustrates a new approach to water and nature regulation, where whole catchments work together, using nature-based and low carbon solutions. This would see environmental targets set at a catchment level, and includes all stakeholders such as water companies, farmers, industry, and housing developers in the local area. A discussion paper has been put together following months of engagement and discussion between different groups across the sector including CIWEM (The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management), RSPB England, The Rivers Trust, and The Wildlife Trusts. At the heart of this is a call to action to policymakers and regulators to help enable reform. We know that collaboration can protect our waterways, it just needs to become the norm. September 16, 2024, marks 10 years of The Sustainable Groundwater Managment Act. Over the past ten years, the Greater Kaweah Groundwater Sustainability Agency has not only developed a comprehensive program to manage groundwater within the Kaweah Subbasin but has also submitted a Draft Groundwater Sustainability Plan (GSP) that continues to be revised and reviewed by the State Water Resource Control Board. We continue to support landowners with tools and resources to help them farm under reduced water allocations. Our efforts include programs such as the Land Fallowing Pilot Program, mitigation for domestic wells that have gone dry due to overdraft, and collaboration with other local agencies to address the needs of Central Valley communities. https://lnkd.in/gXx9VSYx https://lnkd.in/gmEnzymy
