BIG QUESTIONS ON LINKEDIN
I get asked some BIG questions from profiles and clients about LinkedIn. I thought it would be useful to share with you guys and the answers I advise with and give help on.
Are you a beginner on Linkydink? Read on and see if these #weenuggets answer some of your concerns about this platform. Please let me know if they do! I love getting feedback and having conversations about this sort of thing, use my content or the DM 😊
What am I missing?
This question is a common one. Sometimes it is hard to pinpoint exactly what IS missing. Delving deeper into a profile’s Activity Section can help. If you scroll through your own Activity Section and see only your own posts or content in the feed then this is what is missing. Engage on others’ content to address that balance!
On the other hand, if there is a feed showing a string of ‘liked’ content only – this will also be a red flag to follow up on. Linkydink is not all about the likes, it needs comments and discussion to feed the #algorithmijig (algorithm!)
Looking at content can answer the question too. I check posts to see if comments are being replied to and the engagement managed. If content is posted and abandoned then I’m afraid the algorithmijig will abandon it too!
What do I post on LinkedIn?
Also a very common one I get asked by business owners who have spent many, many years on Facebook.
I say you can post SO MUCH on LinkedIn!
- Conversation starters about business topics.
- Tips and advice, guidance for your industry
- Social posts
- Viral style videos that link to inspiration or feel-good kind of vibes
- Recommendations received
- Business journey updates
- Asking for feedback, help or advice
- Articles, blogs, industry updates (shared content not favourable with the algorithmijig)
I think purely promotional advert copy doesn’t do well on LinkedIn and you need to include this more cleverly in your content. Adding value and talking WITH your network rather than AT followers as can be seen on Facebook ads etc is a great tip.
Who do I connect with?
I hear this question a lot! Along with the statement after my suggestions… “I don’t want to connect with anyone outside of my industry or who I don’t know”
Wait. This is LinkedIn! If you want to do business with other profiles, build a network and be open to opportunities you should really connect with different profiles.
So kick up your heels and get involved is what I say. Yes, you might get profiles trying to sell to you, and you might receive some messages that aren’t 100% business (you name it, marriage proposals, scams etc). But, on the whole, the people you will connect with will be decent and normal human beings and understand the wonderful world of Linkydink and being a good connection.
There are so many ways to find people to connect with, I find the following useful:
- Connecting through content that resonates (one of my favourites)
- Connecting with profile that have liked or commented on your own content
- Checking the Who Viewed Me area for interesting adds
- Looking at People You May Know area
- Using the Search area (limited for free accounts so don’t worry the above are so useful)
Can I schedule content on LinkedIn?
People who are new to LinkedIn ask this question often. They are used to scheduling content on Facebook or are used to using just one platform so aren’t sure how to manage using two platforms. Especially if they are a solopreneur/freelancer. I say “yes” you can schedule content to LinkedIn BUT you HAVE TO BE PRESENT when the post publishes to the platform. This is so you can engage with the content and manage the conversations.
Bad scheduling habits for LinkedIn
- Setting up articles to share from a blog site or media platform – LinkedIn doesn’t like links
- Posting multiple times a day to your LinkedIn personal profile with no strategy
- Scheduling the same type of posts with no variety in the media type
- Setting up content to publish when you are asleep or in meetings
Good scheduling habits for LinkedIn
- Schedule content for when you are free to engage
- Check the schedule each morning to see what’s being “fired out”
- Break down blogs and extract copy – add your own opinions and reasoning
- Add content within LinkedIn as well, for example articles (use own blogs or longer posts)
How do I get people to comment on my stuff?
This is such a big one! People think it’s ‘magic’ but it’s not really, it’s following certain steps and tasks. It’s getting on the right side of the algorithmijig. Being social is key – you cannot expect lots of profiles to comment – and therefore support – your content, if you’re not commenting on theirs!
Writing professional, edited, and perfectly-proofread content is helpful at times. But it definitely isn’t an essential skill in my view. Conversational and engaging content that is accessible and welcoming definitely makes you a “smarty pants” when it comes to this stuff!
Some tips broken down to help:
- Ask questions and bring people into the conversation
- Show your human side, talk about all aspects of life (family, weekend, parking ticket rage – whatever!)
- Tag when relevant or with people you are on good terms with when it comes to engaging
- Don’t post a link to an article and expect many comments (especially when building a network)
- Engage, engage, engage!
- Remember things about people (their quirks and likes/dislikes)
- Make it easy for people to remember things about you (your quirks, likes/dislikes, views)
- Thank people for joining conversations, for their opinion, LISTEN, RESPOND
