Brilliant New Autophagy Study in Nature

Autophagy, your body's cellular recycling program, kicks into high gear when water-fasting for 3-7 days, cleaning out damaged parts to fuel healthier cells.

Autophagy will rejuvenate the immune system, grow stem cells, and may prevent cancer. Further research is sure to reveal additional benefits of autophagy.

As I wrote in two books, slowly but surely, Autophagy is becoming the gold standard for weight loss, longevity, and many other health benefits. On Friday, a study published in Nature not only showed the weight loss of 5.7 kg (12.6 lbs) but highlighted:

“The multi-organ response to complete caloric restriction shows distinct effects of fasting duration and weight loss and is remarkably conserved across volunteers with >1,000 significantly responding proteins.”

For seven years, I’ve been on quarterly 120-hour water fasts. You cannot eat or drink anything except water, tea, or coffee without anything in it except for a bit of salt. My goal is not to lose weight but to renew the body and brain through Autophagy.

Japanese Professor Yoshinori Ohsumi received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2016 for identifying Autophagy genes. Read about his investigations into the mechanisms of autophagy <here>.

Autophagy usually kicks in after 72 hours when the ketone levels in my blood exceed 3.0 mmol/L. Over time, my body got used to autophagy, and nowadays, I hit the 3.0 threshold in 36 hours. You can easily measure this yourself with a keto strip – $11.99 for 50 test strips at Walgreens.

The autophagy process empties all trash bins in your brain and body, making you suddenly become very clear of mind and more resistant, and you can keep going in sports. It must have to do something with when we regularly went without food for days in prehistoric times. Instead of switching off the body, it goes into overdrive, giving you extra strength and mental focus to kill that boar with a few pebbles, and the whole family has food on the table again.

* Ketosis is a state when the body doesn't have enough carbohydrates to burn for energy and switches to burning fat-producing ketones. This means that the glucose stored in the liver and muscles (glycogen) will be used up first before the body turns to ketones.

If you’re in an unrelentingly high-stress situation, healthier eating habits won’t decrease your cortisol levels. In this case, it’s time to seek counseling help and follow the recommendations at the end of our book. Don’t forget: Your cortisol measurements give you an incremental picture of what’s happening inside you at the biochemical, emotional, and psychological levels. No other biomarker can reliably offer you this actionable detail.

Understanding Cortisol: The Master Hormone

Much like the conductor of a symphony, cortisol plays a vital role in our body. We interviewed the world’s top scientists across disciplines. Their research shows that Cortisol overrides every fundamental biological process and is a leading factor in thousands of health conditions and diseases. In our book, we establish connections and causality, revealing a comprehensive understanding of the Cortisol puzzle when all its pieces are examined.
