The Business of Being You: What's in a Name?

Names are more than just labels; they’re powerful symbols that carry weight, history, and meaning. They can shape how we see ourselves and how others perceive us. From celebrities who adopt stage names to business professionals who use different versions of their names to suit different contexts, the significance of a name cannot be overstated. But can a name truly give you an edge in life? I believe it can.

In my own journey, I’ve found that success often hinges on the name I use. As Marelle, I’ve built a career marked by creativity, recognition, and respect. Marelle is seen as distinctive, sophisticated, and perhaps even a bit mysterious—a name that commands attention and curiosity. But when I go by Mary, the response can be surprisingly different. It’s as if the world sees me through a different lens, one that doesn’t shine as brightly. The contrast is stark and raises questions about how much of our identity is influenced by something as seemingly simple as a name.

This disparity in treatment based on name isn’t just anecdotal; it touches on deeper social biases and cultural practices. In certain cultures, changing one’s name to improve fortune is not uncommon. Guided by the principles of numerology, where every letter corresponds to a number, individuals seek names that vibrate with positive energy. The belief is that by altering your name, you can shift the cosmic balance in your favor, attracting success, love, or prosperity.

But what about surnames or titles? These too play a significant role in shaping perceptions. A surname can link you to a prestigious lineage or, conversely, a troubled past. It can open doors or close them, depending on the associations it carries. The way you choose to be addressed—whether you go by a nickname, your full name, or a professional title—also influences how people treat you. In many ways, your name is your personal brand, and like any brand, it can be powerful or limiting.

Imagine if you were to change your name today. Would it change your life? For some, particularly those in affluent or high-profile circles, a name change could alter their standing in society, sometimes in undesirable ways. A name carries with it expectations, assumptions, and, often, a certain cachet that can be difficult to replace.

Consider, for example, the practice of name-dropping. People do it because certain names have the power to unlock opportunities that might otherwise remain out of reach. A name that is recognized and respected can open doors that no amount of money or influence could budge. This is the subtle, yet undeniable power of a name.

But there’s also a darker side to names. Sometimes, people may treat you poorly because your name reminds them of someone they dislike, or because it doesn’t fit their preconceived notions of what a “successful” or “intelligent” person should be called. Names can evoke unconscious biases, leading to discrimination or unfair treatment. It’s a reminder that names, while powerful, are also deeply personal and loaded with emotional significance.

So, what does your name say about you? Is it a source of strength or a barrier you must overcome? Does it help you navigate the world, or does it sometimes feel like a burden? In a society that places so much emphasis on identity, your name is often the first impression you make, the first clue others have about who you are. It’s worth considering how your name impacts your life and whether it aligns with the person you want to be.

In the end, a name is more than just a collection of letters. It’s a reflection of who you are, who you aspire to be, and how you’re perceived by the world. Whether you choose to embrace your given name or adopt a new one, understanding the power of your name is key to mastering the business of being you.
