Bust Past the BS that's Slowing Down Your Career Pivot
UGH...another dismal workforce article about how geography is setting us back and making it harder to find a job.
The last thing folks need right now is yet another excuse to feel bad about their chances for finding gainful employment. Instead of making them feel trapped by their surroundings, I choose instead to give you permission to see the brighter side of this picture.
There is hope, the job market is actually hot from what I'm seeing in my client base. So stop complaining and start taking a more strategic action plan to get where you truly deserve. #noexcuses
As a recommended Linkedin Profinder career coach and career pivot expert who sees personal insights from thousands of job seekers first hand, I can tell you that your resume, cover letter...even hiding behind your geography are not the first things to dial up when considering a career pivot.
Instead, follow these steps...
1) CLARITY: Get clear on your strengths, your innate talents, your non-negotiable priorities. Set your Career GPS so you know where you're headed (whether you want to move up where you are, move over to a better company, or move onto something different altogether)
2) CONFIDENCE in your COMPETENCE: Stop dwelling on what you lack. Rather, connect the dots from where you've done well in the past to your future job. They say over half of our new jobs in the year 2030 don't even exist yet...so why not put yourself out there with a combination of your quantifiable achievements coupled with a clear vision of how you can impact your future employer.
3) Learn how to COMMUNICATE your story with a stellar LinkedIn profile, resume, etc so others know how to help you. Note the resume is nearly LAST on the list, you have to do the early work FIRST so you're aiming at a target that will actually make you happy!
4) Not just connect, but REconnect with your trusted circle, especially folks from 1-2-5-10 years ago, including prior roles. You've both collected new people and gained experiences that may help each other.
5) COLLABORATE and empower them to become your new best ambassadors and advocates.

Stop relying on "spray and pray" resume blasting and take time to really reflect on what you bring to the table. And older folks like me had better learn to present our work history as a CENTER of EXCELLENCE!
We just helped an attorney change niches and land a role in under 3 months. A global VP switched industries. A head of Employee Resource Groups pivoted from finance to another industry, one of the top 5 companies in the world. Career pivots are possible, and none of these folks had to relocate. Many companies are allowing remote work beyond January, July or even permanently...so let's not dwell on the geography so much and start building a business case for what we deserve instead.
