Coach vs. Mentor... What's the Difference?
Hell beautiful people!
I have been busy in SCHOOL (never thought I'd say that again!) receiving my executive coaching certificate from Emory's Goizueta Business School. Now that my coaching practice is officially off the ground, I have more time to write and share my learnings here on LinkedIn.
One question I've received a few times already:
"What is the difference between a coach and mentor? And which one do I need?"
I have been a mentor to many people during my career. I have also been a consultant. Both are very different from being a coach.
TOMORROW, I will share my thoughts on the difference between mentors and coaches. I hope it helps you decide which path to choose (spoiler, there is no wrong answer!)
My MAIN newsletter is on Beehiiv. Subscribe today and receive the full newsletter tomorrow!
Here's one more teaser... I will be launching a new website and newsletter very soon! Subscribe to Beehiiv now so you don't miss it.
Talk more tomorrow!
Love,
Jim

2mo💯 Very different hats for each. It's definitely important to understand which one you are looking for or needing... the one you're looking for may not always be the one you need.

2moTotally different roles Jim. Mentoring is about sharing knowledge and coaching is helping others discover themselves and their own solutions. A coach may only ask a couple of questions in a session, recognising when the coachee needs to speak, when they need prompting, challenging & supporting and of course, time to reflect. Both equally valuable, but each has a distinct situation and outcome.

2moThis is one topic that I go over in my leadership programs with all levels of leaders. It is tempting to give answers and yet a coach should ask good questions and help that person get to the answer on their own. It is a difficult, yet very important distinction.
