DAN'S WINE BLOG- THIS WEEK'S WINE REVIEW

Friday, September 22, 2023:  Regulars will know that I have been a Durif fan/fanatic since I first tried the Morris of Rutherglen 1986 Durif. I was enraptured by the bigness of the wine and its propensity to age magnificently over decades. In 2019, I had the pleasure of enjoying a bottle of 1969 Morris Durif from my cellar with David Morris (see article “Divine Durif” in WBM, Nov-Dec 2019 link below)it was sublime!

Over the years I have tasted hundreds of Durif, including the excellent GranMonte Durif from Thailand, Petite Syrah (as the Americans call it) from Ridge Vineyards and L.A. Cetto Petite Syrah from Baja Mexico. I found only one (from Griffith) that I did not like due its being rather sweet. Initially, I thought that Durif=Rutherglen, but over time I discovered some excellent Durif from other regions, starting with the Riverina where both De Bortoli and Calabria make fantastic Durif, followed by the Riverland, Heathcote, Mudgee and of course the Barossa Valley.

It is to the Barossa Valley that we turn today, to the outstanding producer Kalleske Wines, with a whole range of great wines, but in particular it’s Kalleske BAROSSA VALLEY ‘Buckboard’ Single Vineyard Biodynamic 2022 Durif (Vegan), which is exquisite.

In the glass, the wine is so deeply coloured that it is almost black. By comparison, the bouquet is rather subtle with an attractive, complex blend of stone fruit aromas with dried herbs, a smidge of spice and a hint of mocha. The palate is massive, with huge mouth-filling flavours which start out with a very appealing modicum of fruit sweetness on the front palate, leading to a divinely rich mid-palate and finish as silky smooth, slightly drying and grippy on the back palate. WOW! This wine is Nirvana if like me you love big reds.

Brilliant to enjoy now with richer style food, it will age magnificently over a number of years to become one of the best mature Durif in Australia.
