FIVE TRAPS IN PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
After working in the motivational world and being part of the coaching community for over 15 years I have seen some amazing work as well as work that has missed the mark. I discovered a few things I am now both aware of and avoid in the work that I do and the services I seek.
· Motivational torch thrower. Going to a motivational event where the presentation pours energy into you, the crew, the music, the temperature of the room, and the cadence of the presentation are designed to move you emotionally, so you feel euphoric and uplifted by the speaker or the energy created in the room. This experience is not you changing, this is you being temporarily moved and, frankly, manipulated.
· Non-fail success courses. Many programs such as 7-steps to success in (fill in the blank) are processes that have aged out and no longer work, or they are being presented, not by someone who has made a success with these steps, but by someone who plans to make a success selling you these steps. It’s like buying the book on how to become rich selling a book. Any program that does not flex with this market, is not presented by someone who has actually used this process, and one that does not provide a framework that allows the individual to find his/her path is suspect.
· Work life balance programs. I’ve mentioned before that work life balance is not achievable because life ebbs and flows. Learning how to know your core values and how to create non-negotiable boundaries around those values is the first step to work life integration. Life is movement around shifting priorities on any given moment and learning how you best navigate your path is essential.

· The manifestation trap. Even successful people are looking for ways to manifest more, something different, or something worthy of a legacy. Understand that there is no manifestation without aligned action. Part of that action is believing that what you are looking for is achievable, that you give yourself permission to get there, and that you are willing to take steps toward that goal that align with the feeling of already having achieved this success. You’ll be doing all this while staying aligned with who you are.
· The should trap. This is a trap I’ve actually caught myself creating for me. I should do this or that really makes me feel like I lack something. I do not know what is right for anyone, nor do I know exactly how s/he might feel about anything. I, therefor, am not in a position to give this should/must/have to direction. I can share my experience and perception and observation. What action is right for you is something we can explore together. Only you know what works or does not work for you.
There are so many obstacles to be aware of when looking for guidance whether its awareness and meditation, elevated consciousness, new age wisdom, business process development, relationship enhancement or wellness do your homework, be discerning, and go for a test ride first. If it doesn’t fit, move on. There’s more than one road to Mecca.

3moI LOVED your article, Gail Kraft. It’s direct, simple, and very true, especially the part about manifesting. There’s a growing misconception that you can achieve results without aligned action, and it’s misleading so many people. I’m genuinely thrilled to see someone call it out so clearly. Without taking intentional, aligned steps, success remains out of reach. Thank you for shedding light on this crucial truth and helping others see the reality behind true manifestation.
