A Great Bill, A History Lesson
Military and Veterans Affairs Committee that I chair accomplished something about which I want you to know. Senator Bradley's SB1352, would make Fred T. Korematsu day in Arizona January 30th each year. (not a legal holiday). Korematsu was one of approximately 120,000 innocent people of Japanese descent, 2/3rd of whom were American citizens, forced to leave their homes and lives, (executive order 9066) and report to internment camps. Approximately 31,000 men women and children were placed in camps here in Arizona. SB1352 ensures that we memorialize the sacrifice and contribution of all Japanese Americans who were incarcerated during World War II. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the camps closings. Korematsu lost his case before the U S Supreme Court 6-3. Justified as a military necessity. Emotional, very knowledgeable discussion by committee members, Jermaine, Campbell, Andrate, Griffin,Tsosie and Vice Chair Osborne. They told personal stories that related to the Japanese internment. Campbell and Jermaine spoke of 442nd infantry regiment composed of almost entirely 2nd generation Japanese men. 442nd is the most decorated unit in the history of armed conflict. SB1352 passed committee 7-0. Passed senate 30-0. Bill now goes to House floor.
