How Are You Slowing Down This Summer?
Vacations, get-togethers, hanging by the pool, boating, and so much more! These are all things we all love to do in the Summer. But… do we actually fully engage in these activities or is our mind somewhere else? Do we even make time to do these things to begin with or are we too seemingly busy?
I love Summer! When I was a teacher, I got the Summers off. What a dream… right? Not for me. I didn’t know how to truly relax. I thought about September in July. Come August, I’d be well on my way to planning for the next school year. The week before school actually started—God help me!! I was a ginormous wreck! I had back to school nightmares of everything going wrong. I had the most terrible anxious feelings because I wanted everything to be PERFECT!
Since those days, I have learned a lot about why I struggled to actually relax during my Summers off. Being a hyper achiever and my restless ways of being were hijacking my happiness and ability to wind down. One of the things I learned was that I was sabotaging myself and I didn’t even realize it! These “saboteurs” are the negative voices in our heads that get in the way of living our best life and they can take over even the best of us!

Now that we have identified our unique saboteurs, how can we actually slow down this Summer so we can step into our powerful, feminine energy?
Create a daily list of chores and responsibilities together. Doing it as a family gives them independence over which actions they would like to take each day to be a contributing member of the household. Involving them will also help curb any resistance they might have to doing these things, since they had a say in creating them.
Maybe it’s waking up a few minutes before the kids and making yourself a hot cup of coffee and enjoying it out on the back patio with a book. Perhaps it’s taking a mid-afternoon walk in a wooded area and taking in all the sounds of mother nature. How about scheduling time in the evening for a luxurious bath with candles and soft music? Whatever it is, it doesn’t have to take hours. Even a few minutes of doing something you love does wonders.
There’s nothing like having a good chat with friends. Whether it’s going out to dinner or planning a night at one of your homes, getting together with one or a few friends for light-hearted fun can always be a great way to de-stress and enjoy yourself.
Did you know that the blue light emitted from electronics mimics daylight, thus tricking our brains to wake up when we should really be preparing ourselves to rest for the night? This same blue light has also been linked to lowered levels of melatonin, the hormone naturally occurring in our bodies that regulates our sleep-wake cycle. I know this might be a challenge but trust me—it’s SO worth it!
Now that we have some tips on how to slow down, how do we actually come into our true feminine power this Summer?
Start with setting positive intentions for your own well-being. Write down 3 powerful things that light you up and set an intention to be that person every single day.
For me, I say to myself every morning: “I am a loving, courageous, and powerful leader.”
Then, I always take actions aligned what that way of being, like making sure my children, friends, and family feel loved, trying new things, even if they make me nervous, and not being afraid to be an assertive communicator so that I get my needs met. In doing this, by the end of my day, I feel great looking back at how I handled the stressors of my life with ease.
Something else I love to do when making time for myself and winding down in the Summer is to read. Find a book you love and read it to completion or find an audible! This is such a great way to both relax and help elevate your mind at the same time!
