ISSUE 17 – “The Importance of Personal and Professional Growth: A Reflection for Leaders”

As a leader, it’s essential to ask yourself, “What is my plan for growing personally and professionally?” This question should not only be a personal reflection but also one you pose to those you lead, ideally when they first join your organization and then annually thereafter. While it may seem straightforward to ask, many find it challenging to answer. Why is that?

I have yet to meet anyone who wakes up aspiring to be average or intentionally performs poorly. Most people genuinely want to put their best foot forward and live fulfilling lives. The challenge often lies not in the desire to grow but in understanding how to achieve that growth. There’s a common misconception that growth occurs naturally; unfortunately, the only areas of natural growth I’ve observed aren’t particularly admirable—like bigger ears, for instance!

Your commitment to personal and professional development is a key reason you’ve reached your current position. You’ve invested in your education, attended conferences, read books, and sought mentorship and coaching to stretch yourself into the leader you are today. You followed a carefully carved career path, built a plan, and disciplined yourself day in and day out, adjusting as you stumbled along the way. Congratulations on your achievements!

But who are you helping to achieve similar growth? There are many aspiring leaders waiting for you to invest in them. Have you asked your team, “What is your plan for growing yourself personally and professionally?” Your team is eager for this conversation, and they are looking for your guidance to find their answers.

Thanks for another great article Dennis LaRue Jr.! I often say people are like fruit - they are either ripening or rotting! You have to grow to keep ripening. You need to model growth for your people first, then ask them about their growth plan. We need to connect their growth plan with their goals, which means you need to really know your people and what their goals are.

Awesome read! Thanks for sharing. Investing in yourself as a leader is similar to putting the oxygen mask on yourself so that you CAN help others. It also models the behavior you want from those you lead.
