JUNE 2024 REVIEW

Welcome to our June edition! The past week has brought a notable change in the UK weather, with warm temperatures and sporadic rainfall. As we look ahead to July, forecast suggest a mix of sunny spells and occasional showers, ideal for both growth and maintenance.

I am sure, apart from the hayfever sufferers amongst us, this improvement in the weather is welcomed. However this brings its only challenges when implementing landscaping schemes, especially with keeping areas well watered to ensure successful establishment.

It is nice to see fresh approaches from leading housing developers for new sites to start utilising landscaping schemes to help mitigate the impact of climate change. Such as the integration of rain gardens to manage surface water, and using larger sized trees which not only make an immediate impact on the aesthetics, also contribute to reducing CO2. With the BNG improvements that came into force, these are a few things some are doing to meet/ exceed the requirements of the new government policy.

Going into July we find ourselves at a significant political crossroads with the upcoming UK General Election. The outcome of this election will undoubtedly influence future policies on housing and environmental sustainability, making it a crucial moment for all of us invested in these fields.

I hope you take the time to read the June newsletter, and we hope you have a great July.

WILDLIFE POND PROJECT AT SUPREME AWARD-WINNING SITE

This was an ecology enrichment project to transform the area into a beautiful space to create natural walks and attract wildlife.

There was just the small complication of four large ponds with steep slippery banks and a tight deadline.

HELLO SUNSHINE!

Working in Landscaping means long hours under the sun, which can pose significant health risks if proper precautions aren’t taken. Sun exposure and dehydration are two critical concerns, and so we have put policies in place to keep our teams safe and productive.

We supply kit that keep our teams cool and protected. We’ve issued water bottles and encourage drinking every 20 minutes to keep hydrated. We’ve issued sunscreen with SPF30 and recommend reapplication every two hours minimum.

Remember all, take regular breaks to get some shade, keep hydrated, and keep safe.

WASTELAND TO PUBLIC HAVEN

PGE were asked to transform a failed wildflower meadow with turf and replace failed trees to create a beautiful open space that was also functional, within a short space of time.

MEET LEE & CHAD

Lee Hobson & Chad Willetts joined PGE 3 months ago, and we wanted to catch up with them to see how they’re settling in.

Lee joined PGE as Senior team leader and Chad as an Operative, and they have predominately been working at one of our key sites, CALA Fernleigh Park, which after winning Supreme in 2023, has just been recognised in the recent Pride in the job 2024.

After being self-emplyed for the past few years, they wanted to try something diffierent, so reached out to PGE. Lee said “since our interview we have felt welcomed and a part of the team”. He continued to say “"We hope to deliver high standards and build relationships with customers and clients to progress forward for PGE”.

Lee added “I would like to thank PGE for giving us the opportunity”.

We’re so pleased to have you both in our team, and thank you for being a pleasure to onboard and for just getting stuck in.

If you spot Lee and Chad about, please give them a wave.

Bughouses and insect habitats have a part to play too....but good to see BNG actually making a difference.
