LIFE IMPRISIONMENT FOR ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF FIREARMS IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA

The Firearms Amendment Bill 2022 in Parliament, unanimously supported by all MPs, for life imprisonment for unlawful possession of firearms in Papua New Guinea. Life imprisonment is now the maximum penalty for illegally possessing anyone of the five categories of guns or firearms including home made guns.

Life imprisonment is now the maximum penalty for:

  1. Manufacturing of homemade guns;
  2. Illegal ownership and possession of firearms;
  3. Illegal possession and use of firearms;
  4. Illegal possession of prohibited firearms; and
  5. Ownership and possession of machine guns.

Laws work well when there is no bias and favoritism...hardly the case in PNG

A very stupid bill supported by idiots..there's more killings by knives, axes, metal bars , hands etc than firearms..They used very few incidents to drive the narrative that firearm related deaths account for more than any other weapon, without providing statistics..

There is no difference if some leaders having it too as licensed arms. Moral conduct is much needed to make such decisions in Leading people.

Without the adequate capacity of the intelligence community to combat gun-smuggling and the empowerment of police personnel to develop and maintain good relationships with the communities, this will have no effect on addressing the problem.

This is great. Maybe the same emphasis (life imprisonment penalty) be placed on corruption at the highest level too should be made.  My personal observation: Guns are not taking so much lives as compared to poor health system due to unavailability of basic health care services and shortage of basic drugs (and/or low quality) and consumables in our already run-down health facilities throughout PNG. More people are dying everyday from preventable diseases then Guns. Corruption is the root of why we are facing most challenges. They should also consider life-imprisonment penalties for corruption as well.
