Making change

I once held a job as Chief Sales Officer for a company that brought in venture capital money after we had a record year. When the investment was final I was told nothing would change. That’s when I knew it would. I was let go in less than 90 days.

The only thing I’ve found constant in business or life is change.

Like it or not, NOTHING stays the same forever.

  • Are you ready?
  • Do you have a plan if your best customer leaves?
  • Do you have a side hustle ready if you’re fired?
  • How about if you have a mass exodus from your company?

Change happens.

So, why not prepare and take advantage of it?

Here’s 4 steps that will get you ready and reduce any anxiety you might have about change in your life.

First, acknowledge that change will come. Just getting your mind straight on this fact is 50% of the battle.

Next, think about what you love doing and what you are good at. Develop a mindset that focuses on that area of your life.

Then write, plan, and create something around it. The mere act of having intention and taking some action will bring you closer to being that person.

Finally, network with people who you can interact with as a partner, mentor, or employee and keep the connection between you two. It’s like building a bank account of goodwill where someday you may need to make a withdrawal.

I like the idea from Gayle Forman:

We’re born in one day.
We die in one day.
Anything can happen in one day.
And, we can change in one day.

So, here’s your Action Item and Mission should you decide to accept it: Don’t sit waiting for something to happen TO you. It will. Get prepared and make the change on your terms.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be. You can do this.

I really believe in the point about the side hustle. Having multiple projects in progress helps me feel more in control and less anxious about unexpected business challenges.
