November 2024 Community Newsletter
This month we finalised the agenda for the UK Lean Summit that takes place in April 2025. The event seems ages away, but it will come around much faster than we realise. I was reminded of the benefits such events can bring when I was asked to visit London Stone a couple of weeks ago. The team there were hosting the Canal & River Trust charity (another Summit speaker in 2024) to share their lean journey.
It was great to see how London Stone explained what and why they do what they do and share how lean thinking is so useful for them. Such important sharing activities are a great by-product of the Summit as delegates build their own network of lean thinkers. Last week we got to try something completely different.
We wanted to teach our problem solving learning materials to a younger generation – in particular Gen Z students. I often feel that lean thinking is less well known by Millennials than by Gen X, let alone Gen Z. So I am interested to see if students find lean thinking and practice relevant to them.
Fortunately, we know a few academics and our good friend Professor Nick Rich and his team at Swansea University were up for conducting an experiment. We taught two classes our rapid problem solving learning process. We will share the process and the outcomes at the Summit as we’ve asked the team at Swansea to discuss their reflections.
The important part is thinking through whether current learning processes are applicable to Gen Z and whether problem solving (which we often say is the number 1 lean skill to develop) feels relevant to them. I’m sure this will be something any organisational leader will find useful. I am certain that we can engage young people to become the problem solvers of tomorrow. We have to…. Best wishes,Dave Brunt

Visit Toyota UK in 2025!
After a fantastic response to the sold-out visits at Toyota’s Deeside Engine Plant and Burnaston Vehicle Manufacturing Plant in 2024, we’re excited to announce another opportunity to collaborate with Toyota UK in 2025! This year, participants can tour either the Engine Manufacturing Plant in Deeside, North Wales, or the Vehicle Manufacturing Plant in Burnaston, Derby.
This year, participants will have the unique chance to explore how Toyota develops the capabilities of its team members at both of their plants. All proceeds of the visit will be donated to Toyota’s Charitable Trust. In 2024, we raised over £24,000 with your incredible support! You can learn more about the Toyota Visits Here.
