1. Meta will offer a subscription-based, ad-free version of Facebook and Instagram to European Union users to comply with privacy regulations.

The cost to remove ads from the apps will be €9.99 per month. Uptake is not expected to be high, but Meta is appeasing regulators by providing an ad-free alternative.

How will this affect Meta? In Q2 2023, Meta generated $17.88 on average from EU users* on average - between €5-6 per month.

X also confirmed an ad-free plan last week. ‘Premium+’ is priced at $16 per month to remove ads which will be offered globally, rather than only in the EU.

Not a good news for the users. If a platform is forced to charge every user, soon ‘troublemakers’ will triumph on the platform & the chaos will just brew.

Right idea, but not worth the money. Facebook's algorithm changes over recent years have made the platform almost unusable. And I suspect those who don't pay the subscription fee will face even more deterioration. It's a busted flush totally dependent on legacy loyalty and users' inability to move en masse to a better platform.

With Meta and Netflix indexing their price points to ad-free or ad-inclusive plans, it's like we're discovering television all over again… I can't help but chuckle a bit. Also, I'm pretty sure I'm aging myself 😁
