The Packington Estate, Islington

Overview

The Palm Centre was contracted to install a large Chilean Wine Palm, Jubaea chilensis, at the Packington Estate in Islington, North London. The tree was sourced in Spain, having originally been shipped from Chile 5 years previously. Weighing 10,000kg with a total height of 6m, it is probably the largest hardy palm ever planted outdoors in the UK.

A mobile crane lifted the palm into the planting hole, where the Platipus Deadman Tree Anchoring System with Plati-Mat was installed to secure the rootball. Installation of the system was very straight forward, Platipus was the best solution to accommodate the huge rootball, 220cm width and 110cm depth. The palm tree now sits proudly in the centre of the Packington Estate, the residents can both admire it from their balconies or walk underneath it in the play area.
