I still hope that it will be read, heard, or seen by the right people, and that you, my dear followers, will eagerly discuss it, like it, and share it. 🙂

The tracks of the future demand innovative solutions – and the Deutsche Bahn has the potential to play a crucial key role in this. From developing smart online services to creating new jobs, the people in Germany can benefit from this groundbreaking transformation. In this article, I would like to present an approach that could restore Germany's reputation as a pioneer in engineering, science, and industry.

The Deutsche Bahn has been at the center of critical scrutiny for years. Some of the most well-known issues include delays and unreliability, which significantly disrupt the smooth operation of rail traffic. Thus, passengers willingly allow themselves to be pushed into already crowded subways or trains by specially hired station staff (known as "Oshiya" in Tokyo's subway) to ensure the schedule is kept. In Japan, every delay, even of a few minutes, is carefully documented and deemed unacceptable. In contrast, the Deutsche Bahn frequently struggles with delays and unreliability, usually caused by outdated infrastructure, inadequate maintenance, inefficient operational processes, uncooperative passengers, and, in recent years, increasingly by striking employees.

Investment Readiness

The investment strategies of other countries are often long-term and aimed at specific goals. Japan and Switzerland consistently invest in maintaining and modernizing their rail infrastructures, leading to a stable and reliable rail network. In Germany, however, investments are often hampered by bureaucratic hurdles, lengthy planning cycles, and insufficient coordination between different modes of transport. These issues delay necessary projects and result in a partially even deficient infrastructure.

Artificial intelligences fully automate control and monitoring of the rail vehicles and switches. Obstacles are immediately recognized, and using connected systems, alternative routes for the entire traffic are calculated.

In August 2023, the Deutsche Bahn launched innovative programs to promote jobs in the field of individual transport to make long-distance travel more attractive. These strategies reflect the company's commitment to addressing the changing needs of travelers while pursuing sustainability goals. But is that enough? Are customers really satisfied? Personally, I would only be satisfied if I could depart and arrive on time. Many other customers probably feel the same.

Of course, this will also impact personnel, infrastructure, and the technologies used. In the future, different personnel will be needed: train attendants, conductors, and locomotive drivers will decrease in passenger transport, while technicians, engineers, and cleaning staff will be increasingly in demand.

The infrastructure needs adjustments. The planned automation of switch facilities and automatically updating schedules must be implemented. Real-time tracking of vehicles could be realized using known GPS systems. Existing sidings, which were previously unused, could become more attractive as a result.

The technology must be adapted to digital requirements. A small, highly networked team could efficiently manage a large number of units with the help of digital assistance systems. It is worth mentioning positively that insights from autonomous driving can be utilized. Although lane-keeping assistants are not necessary, data from collision control and distance maintenance can indeed be adapted for the planned pods.

Train stations will also require modifications. Parking spaces for the pods and loading ramps for electric vehicles are necessary. Initially, the pods must also be constructed, requiring corresponding designs and prototypes.

These are just a few examples.
