So... A Dance Journey: From Challenges to Triumphs #10

🎉 After four months offline, I'm back! To reconnect, rekindle and reintroduce myself, as your dance enthusiast and entrepreneur. Today I share my dance journey to date, from challenges to triumphs. This is only the tip of the iceberg! - My journey has reflected a real passion and a delight in championing dance beyond the stage! Read on to get into the groove…

  1. ✨ When and how did you first fall in love with dancing, and how did your passion for dance evolve and grow?

My passion for dance was ignited at 8 when my grandmother treated me to a magical experience - watching "The Lion King" live at the West End in London, just weeks before she passed away. The vibrant colours and stage production, left an indelible mark on me. From that moment on, I knew the stage would be an integral part of my life's journey. However, my dance journey officially began at age 4, thanks to the loving influence of my aunt and mother, who introduced me to the world of Ballet, Tap, and Latin dance.

✨ 2. If you could choreograph any dance piece, what would it be and why?

My favourite dance movie has to be "West Side Story." I'm amazed by its fearless choreography and the way it brings real-life issues to life through dance. The film's portrayal of themes like rivalry and discrimination is incredibly powerful. Another beloved film is "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," a childhood favourite. In 2023, I had the joy of sharing my passion for dance as an artist practitioner, teaching children through this project via an audition. It was a fulfilling experience to share my skills and inspire young minds in a school setting. Thank you.

✨ 3. What are your top 3 go-to songs on your dance playlist right now?

Song 1 - MOVE by Beyonce

Song 2 - Natural Mystic - Bob Marley & The Wailers

Song 3 - Michael Jackson: Greatest Hits (Album)

Ask me this question again next month and I guarantee you, that it will change.

✨ 4. How do you navigate the competitive landscape of the dance world?

Detoxing for me means stepping away from social media periodically. While it's a vital platform for exposure, the digital realm can feel overwhelming. I prioritise human connections, staying offline to connect with loved ones and enjoying nature walks to ground myself.

✨ 5. What's your weekly fitness routine like to support your dancing?

My holistic approach to fitness includes physical, mental, and nutritional wellbeing. I hit the gym weekly, enjoying tone, cycle, and circuit classes. I choose fruits or healthy fats like avocados and peanut butter for breakfast. Yet, I enjoy my weekend indulgences. Cupcakes and waffles are my guilty pleasures!

🎉 Bonus: Looking back, what's the most significant challenge you've overcome as a dancer, and how did it shape you?

Undergoing an ankle surgery mid-career was a tough challenge and it reshaped me profoundly. It sparked a shift towards a broader perspective on dance, beyond the stage. Exploring health, inclusivity, and community engagement became my focus, birthing a passion for teaching, writing, and travel. I have always been fascinated by the business of dance and behind the scenes since I was 19 years old. I became more curious and I am thankful for this turning point.
