Three habits to start your day with enthusiasm: Water, Focus and Energy
“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be” Lao Tzu
How many “best ways to start a day” articles are out there? The logical answer would be that there are as many articles as there are people, since each of us might have a “better way” that applies and fits to our own personal style. The less straightforward answer is this: even though we all have different styles and our own ways of doing things, there are a few essential ideas and practices that are common to all of us.
The best way to start your day is based on this assumption of commonalities among all of us, and not our differences. I propose three main ideas that, once they become habits, will definitely boost your mood and energy in the mornings.
Water
You have probably heard that you should be drinking near one gallon of water per day. The Mayo Clinic recommends drinking 3 liters per day for men and 2.2 liters per day for women*. How much you should drink depends on several factors, however, including physical activity, environment, pregnancy, the status of various health conditions, among others. Now, how relevant is the time of the day in which you drink that water? There is strong evidence suggesting that drinking at least 0.5 to 1.5 liters of water first thing in the morning is a powerful mechanism to “wake your body up”.
Think of it this way: if you have a normal sleep, that means that in the morning you are waking up from 6 to 8 hours of not drinking water. Therefore, your body, which has been working through the night to flush toxins and dead cells out of our brain, is dehydrated. Drinking water in the morning fires up the metabolism, helps your body get rid of the toxins and dead cells waiting to get out, and replenishes your brain with the precious liquid it has used to clean itself.
Drinking water in the morning means doing it as soon as you get out of your bed. You can brush your teeth later and wait a few minutes to grab a bite. Drinking water before a meal has been associated with weight loss equivalent of up to 4.5 pounds over a period of three months**.
Remember that 70% of your body and 85% of your brain’s cells are made up of water. You have to nurture the only one thing you will have for all your life: your body. Drink water in the morning!
Focus
The connection of our souls, minds and flesh is only achieved when we are able to use our conscious power to align to all our resources. Mindfulness is the way to use your focused conscious and unconscious concentration in your emotions, thoughts and sensations. Even though mindfulness is a silent connection with your inner-self, I am proposing another step in the process of mindfulness: Focusing. Once you get up and drink water, proceed to use few minutes for mindfulness and focusing. This provides several benefits:
1) Devise your plan for the day: when you have a clear plan for the day, your energy will be concentrated on achieving it. This involves more than identifying the intentions you have for what you want to achieve; it requires summoning the power of visualization through focusing;
2) Think about challenges you may face and skills you will utilize in order to achieve your plan: when you visualize what you want for the day, you also have to consciously bring to your mind the challenges that might come up, and the skills and capacities you have to deal with them. This is important for one powerful reason: sometimes our challenges are bigger than our skills, and we might get anxious. Some other times, our challenges might be smaller than our skills, and we might get bored. Using conscious focusing allows you to have a better picture of challenges and skills/capacities, and what you need in order to fully live each experience without getting bored or anxious. This concept is called Flow and it was developed by best-selling author Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. In order to fully (optimally) live your experiences and life, you either have to invest in increasing your skills in order to cope with challenges and avoid anxiety, or increase the challenges when your skills are high in order to avoid boredom.
3) Mindfulness, meditation and focus brings one of the greatest benefits for humans: self-awareness. In the process of focusing you are in connection with who you really are, without listening to the noises of the world. You can use this time in the morning to achieve a powerful connection with your inner-self, listen to your body, pay attention to your emotions, and get to know more of you. “Know thyself” is one of the highest challenges of our generation.
Energy
Last, and certainly not least (neither first before drinking water!) is the energy produced by physical activity. But, wait a minute, isn’t physical activity consuming energy instead of producing it? Physical activities are well known to produce a self-reinforcing cycle of using and restoring energy by effectively using your metabolism in order to get all the nutrients of the healthy food you are eating. Physical activity releases endorphins which are known to have a positive effect on mood and energy levels. Who wouldn’t want to start their day in a great mood? In addition, research has shown that physical activity in the morning increases mental acuity.
After drinking water and using your conscious power to focus for the plan of the day, you should get a light snack and engage in some kind of activity that makes your body move. Running, biking, walking, hiking, dancing, skating or whatever type of activity you like doing that makes your body move for at least 30 minutes will make this work. I have seen two main obstacles for people to engage in physical activity in the morning:
1) The difficulty of waking up early in order to work out: to this I have to say that is all about decisions and habits. The first step, the first time, is always the most difficult one. I am a long distance runner and a friend once asked me if I ever get tired or bored of running. I said yes, but that if I give my conscious mind the time to undo what my unconscious-automatic mind has learned, then I won’t do it. Therefore, when I notice the smallest sign of thinking twice about going, I just put on my shoes and get out of the door. You can do it! A common saying among runners is that the hardest part of the run was getting out the door. Barring injury or bad weather, people never regret their decision to MOVE! And
2) People see physical activity as a “work” out, and not something in which they could find enjoyment. It all depends on you, your goals and how your plan out your day. I would say that it is easier to engage in an activity that you really like. However, it is possible that at the beginning you will have a harder time breaking the inertia and gaining momentum.
At the end of the day, it is your decision to create habits from which you will rip many benefits.

9yGreat article, start my day with Zija which is mixed with water, get ready for work, dring another bottle of water, after work take a two hour nap and head for the gym for a two hour workout. At time like you it is hard and becomes difficult to put those shoes on, once at the gym I am so energized. Thanks!
