Uniting for Disability Inclusion – Join #WeAreBillionStrong
Dear Friends,
As we step into February, we are reminded of the importance of unity, advocacy, and collective action in our ongoing journey toward disability inclusion. In a world where inclusion often feels like an afterthought, we must come together and drive meaningful change.
It's time to shift our support away from those who merely pay lip service to inclusion and toward those who genuinely fight for the rights and representation of people with disabilities.
We must stop rewarding brands and organizations that fail to represent our community authentically and instead amplify the voices of those who champion our cause.
Let's join forces to create a change that begins with us—the global community of individuals with disabilities, our caregivers, families, friends, and allies. We can convene, become discoverable, and create a global identity accelerator for our collective voice.
We've waited long enough for corporations, non-profits, NGOs, and governments to integrate disability inclusion fully into the workforce and society. Despite their efforts, we remain on the periphery—an afterthought in their diversity agendas. But we can't afford to wait any longer. It's time for us to take charge and lead by example.
We call for a global movement fueled by our strength in coming together. Our collective power is immense; together, we can support each other and create the change we wish to see.
Join our free global grassroots effort at Billion Strong and use the hashtag #WeAreBillionStrong to share your stories, challenges, and triumphs. But more importantly, pledge to stop supporting and funding corporate brands and other groups that don't authentically represent our community.
This is our call for action. We must unite to amplify our voices and create a world where disability inclusion isn't an option—it's a given.
Together, we are a force to be reckoned with. Together, we are @BillionStrong.
In solidarity,
Debra Ruh,

10 Points Reflecting Debra's Letter
These points encapsulate the essence of Debra's letter and serve as pillars for our ongoing advocacy efforts. Let's continue to amplify our voices, share our stories, and work together to create a world where everyone is valued and included.
1. Join the Movement
“Uniting for True Disability Inclusion”
In a world where true inclusion remains elusive, we must harness the power of collective action. #WeAreBillionStrong is more than just a hashtag; it's a rallying cry for authentic representation and genuine inclusion. By joining this movement, you become part of a global community dedicated to breaking down barriers and championing the rights of people with disabilities.
But what does it mean to unite for disability inclusion truly? It means standing together to demand more than token gestures or surface-level diversity. It means advocating for policies, practices, and attitudes that recognize every individual's inherent value and dignity, regardless of ability.
Joining #WeAreBillionStrong isn't just about adding your voice to the chorus but amplifying it. It's about lending your strength to a movement that seeks to reshape the narrative around disability, transforming it from a story of marginalization to empowerment.
So, whether you're a person with a disability, a caregiver, a friend, or an ally, we invite you to join us. Together, we can build a more inclusive world—one where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, contribute, and belong.
Are you ready to embrace the power of collective action? Join us, and let's show the world what true disability inclusion looks like. #WeAreBillionStrong.
2. Redefining Representation
“Our Call for Authentic Inclusion”
As we embark on our journey towards true disability inclusion, it's crucial to address the issue of representation. For far too long, brands and organizations have paid lip service to diversity and inclusion while failing to represent the disability community authentically. It's time to challenge this status quo and demand genuine representation.
Authentic inclusion goes beyond simply featuring people with disabilities in marketing materials or hiring a few token employees. It requires a fundamental shift in mindset that recognizes the unique perspectives, talents, and contributions of individuals with disabilities.
We call on brands and organizations to move beyond performative gestures and take concrete steps towards genuine inclusion. This means actively seeking out and amplifying the voices of people with disabilities in decision-making processes, ensuring that products, services, and spaces are accessible to all, and fostering a culture of belonging where everyone feels valued and respected.
But our call for authentic inclusion extends beyond just the corporate world. It's also a call to action for society as a whole. We must challenge stereotypes, dismantle barriers, and create opportunities for people with disabilities to participate and thrive in every aspect of life fully.
We can redefine representation and build a world where disability is acknowledged and celebrated. Join us in demanding authentic inclusion from brands, organizations, and society. Let's create a future where everyone is seen, heard, and valued for who they are.
3. Global Identity Accelerator
“Amplifying Our Collective Voice”
In our quest for true disability inclusion, our collective voice is one of the most powerful tools at our disposal. By coming together and sharing our experiences, perspectives, and aspirations, we can amplify our message and effect meaningful change on a global scale. That's why we're calling on individuals from all walks of life to join us in creating a platform for our shared identity that catalyzes positive action and advocacy.
Our global identity accelerator is more than just a platform; it's a virtual gathering place where the disability community and their allies can connect, collaborate, and mobilize for change. Here, you'll find a diverse array of voices, each with their unique story and vision for the future.
But our goal isn't just to share stories; it's to spark dialogue, foster understanding, and inspire action. Through discussions, webinars, workshops, and other interactive events, we'll explore key issues facing our community, brainstorm innovative solutions, and empower individuals to become agents of change in their communities.
Together, we'll spotlight the challenges and triumphs of the disability experience, raising awareness and building empathy among those who may not yet fully understand our perspective. We'll also celebrate our collective resilience, creativity, and strength, showcasing how people with disabilities contribute to the richness and diversity of our world.
So whether you're a seasoned advocate or someone just beginning to find their voice, we invite you to join us. Together, let's amplify our collective voice and create a future where disability inclusion is not just a dream but a reality for all.
4. Beyond Lip Service
“Shifting Support to Genuine Allies”
In our pursuit of true disability inclusion, it's imperative that we move beyond mere lip service and actively support those who are genuine allies in the fight for disability rights and representation. Too often, organizations and individuals claim to support diversity and inclusion, yet their actions fail to align with their words. It's time to hold them accountable and redirect our support to those truly committed to advocating for our community.
But what does it mean to be a genuine ally? It means actively listening to the voices of people with disabilities, amplifying their concerns, and using one's platform and privilege to effect positive change. It means advocating for inclusive policies and practices within organizations, challenging ableism and discrimination wherever it may be found, and actively seeking opportunities to elevate marginalized communities' voices.
As members of the disability community, we have the power to shape the narrative and influence the decisions of those around us. By pledging our support to genuine allies, we send a clear message that empty gestures and tokenism will no longer be tolerated. Instead, we demand authentic engagement and meaningful action.
So, how can you shift your support to genuine allies? Start by researching organizations and individuals with a track record of advocating for disability rights and representation. Look for evidence of their commitment, such as inclusive hiring practices, accessibility initiatives, and partnerships with disability-led organizations. And don't be afraid to hold them accountable if they fall short of their promises.
Let's pledge to support those who stand with us in our fight for equality and inclusion. By standing together, we can create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of ability.

5. From Periphery to Prominence
“Empowering Ourselves”
For too long, the disability community has been relegated to the periphery of society, treated as an afterthought rather than an integral part of the fabric of our communities. But no more. It's time for us to step into the spotlight, take charge of our narrative, and shape a future where inclusion is not just an option but a fundamental principle that guides every aspect of society.
Empowering ourselves starts with recognizing our inherent worth and value as individuals with disabilities. It means rejecting the notion that we are somehow less capable or deserving of respect and opportunity simply because of our differences. Instead, we must embrace our strengths, celebrate our achievements, and demand the same rights and opportunities afforded to everyone else.
But empowerment isn't just about asserting our rights; it's also about building collective power and solidarity within our community. We can amplify our voices and effect meaningful change by coming together, sharing our experiences, and supporting one another. We can shape the world around us by advocating for policy reforms, challenging stereotypes, or creating inclusive spaces where everyone feels welcome.
It's time to stop waiting for others to permit us to participate fully in society. Instead, we must seize the reins and take charge of our destinies. This means advocating for ourselves, advocating for one another, and advocating for a world where disability inclusion is not just a goal but a reality.
So, let's stand tall, speak up, and take action. Let's show the world what we're capable of and demand nothing less than full and equal participation in every aspect of society. Together, we can shape a future where inclusion is not negotiable but non-negotiable.
6. #WeAreBillionStrong
“Sharing Stories, Building Strength”
At the heart of the #WeAreBillionStrong movement lies the power of storytelling. Each carries a unique narrative shaped by our experiences, challenges, triumphs, and dreams. By coming together to share our stories, we not only celebrate the diversity of our community but also build strength and resilience in the face of adversity.
Joining the conversation means more than just adding your voice to the mix; it means actively listening to the stories of others, empathizing with their struggles, and celebrating their victories. It's about recognizing that while our experiences may be different, we are united by a common bond—the shared experience of living with a disability.
Through storytelling, we raise awareness about the issues facing our community, break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and foster understanding and empathy. Whether through social media posts, blog articles, podcasts, or community events, every story shared helps shine a light on the richness and diversity of the disability experience.
But storytelling isn't just about highlighting our challenges but also celebrating our triumphs and successes. Every achievement deserves to be recognized and celebrated, from small victories in daily life to major milestones on the road to equality and inclusion. By sharing our successes, we inspire hope, resilience, and determination in others, showing them that anything is possible with perseverance and support.
So, whether you're a person with a disability, a caregiver, a friend, or an ally, we invite you to join us in sharing your story. Together, let's build a community where every voice is heard, every story is valued, and everyone is celebrated for who they are. Because when we come together, we are truly #BillionStrong.
7. The Power of Unity
“Catalyzing Change Together”
In a world where systemic barriers and discrimination continue to marginalize the disability community, the power of unity becomes our most potent weapon in the fight for meaningful societal change. When we come together as a collective force, we amplify our voices, magnify our impact, and pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable future for all.
At the heart of this unity lies the recognition that our struggles and destinies are interconnected. By standing in solidarity, we bolster our strength and create a powerful force for change that cannot be ignored.
But what does this unity look like in action? It means forming alliances with other marginalized communities, recognizing the intersections of oppression, and advocating for policies and practices that promote equity and justice for all. It means speaking out against ableism, discrimination, and injustice wherever we encounter it and working together to dismantle the systems that perpetuate inequality.
Our collective power also extends to the realm of advocacy and activism. By pooling our resources, sharing our expertise, and coordinating our efforts, we can leverage our influence to effect tangible change at local, national, and global levels. Whether it's advocating for accessible transportation, fighting for inclusive education, or pushing for workplace accommodations, our united front has the potential to catalyze transformative change that benefits everyone.
But perhaps most importantly, the power of unity lies in its ability to inspire hope and resilience in the face of adversity. In a world that often seeks to divide us, coming together as a community reminds us that we are not alone in our struggles and that together, we have the strength to overcome any obstacle.
So, let us embrace the power of unity, recognizing that when we stand together, we are unstoppable. Let us harness our collective strength to catalyze change, build a more inclusive society, and create a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Together, we can truly make a difference.
8. Action Time
“Committing to Tangible Progress”
Now is the time for action. It's not enough to discuss the need for disability inclusion; we must actively commit to making tangible progress towards this goal. That's why we call on individuals and organizations to step up and pledge their support to the global movement for disability inclusion.
Pledging means more than just making a promise; it means committing concrete actions to drive real change in our communities and beyond. Whether you're an individual, a business, a non-profit organization, or a government agency, there are countless ways you can contribute to the cause of disability inclusion.
For individuals, this might mean advocating for inclusive policies and practices in your workplace or community, volunteering with disability rights organizations, or simply educating yourself and others about the issues facing the disability community. It could also involve actively supporting businesses and brands, prioritizing accessibility and inclusion in their products and services.
For businesses and organizations, pledging to support disability inclusion might involve implementing accessibility measures in your physical spaces and digital platforms, ensuring that your hiring practices include people with disabilities, or partnering with disability-led organizations to amplify their voices and support their work.
For governments and policymakers, pledging means prioritizing disability inclusion in legislative agendas, allocating resources to support disability rights initiatives, and consulting with disability advocates and experts when making decisions that impact the lives of people with disabilities.
But regardless of who you are or your role, the most important thing is to take action. By pledging to contribute to the global movement for disability inclusion actively, you're not just making a statement—you're committing to building a more inclusive and equitable world for all.
So, are you ready to take action? Join us in pledging to support disability inclusion and participate in the change we wish to see. Together, we can make a difference.
9. Creating a World of Inclusion
“Our Vision, Our Responsibility”
Imagine a world where inclusion is not just a lofty ideal but a lived reality for everyone, regardless of ability. This vision drives our movement for disability inclusion—a vision of a world where everyone is valued, respected, and given equal opportunities to thrive.
But realizing this vision requires more than good intentions; it requires collective action and a shared commitment to making inclusion the norm, not the exception. It's a responsibility that falls on all of us—together, we must work tirelessly to dismantle barriers, challenge biases, and create a society where everyone feels welcome and included.
This starts with fostering a culture of inclusion in every aspect of life. In our schools, workplaces, communities, and beyond, we must strive to create environments that are accessible, accommodating, and respectful of diverse abilities. This means providing necessary accommodations and support services, promoting inclusive policies and practices, and actively challenging discrimination and ableism wherever it may arise.
But creating a world of inclusion is not just about addressing physical barriers; it's also about changing hearts and minds. We must confront the attitudes and beliefs that perpetuate stigma and discrimination against people with disabilities, challenging stereotypes and promoting positive representations in the media and popular culture.
Moreover, creating a world of inclusion requires us to recognize and address the intersecting forms of oppression that impact marginalized communities. We cannot achieve true inclusion without also addressing issues of race, gender, sexuality, class, and other forms of identity-based discrimination.
Ultimately, creating a world of inclusion is our collective responsibility—to ourselves, each other, and future generations. The journey will require persistence, determination, and unwavering commitment, but the rewards are immeasurable. By working together, we can build a world where everyone has the opportunity to live their lives to the fullest, regardless of ability.
So, let's roll up our sleeves and get to work. Together, let's make inclusion a reality for all.
