Why Resolutions Don’t Stick (and How to Change That in 2025!)
Happy New Year! I hope you’re feeling as excited as I am about stepping into 2025. Today, I want to share something a little different: an insight that first struck me when I was retraining in Psychology at Sheffield University. It’s the very reason why my New Year’s resolutions used to fall flat—and why yours might have too.
Let’s dive in.
Why Resolutions Don’t Stick We’ve all been there. You set a resolution: “To be more organised,” “To lose weight,” or “To compete at a higher level.” But these goals are not clear… I mean, lose weight? What are we doing, ditching sweets altogether or just talking about a little more reservation?
Maybe you’re a little better than “vague”—you’ve heard about SMART goals, and you come up with a plan. For me, it looked like this:
- Have my accounts up to date each week.
- Be on time for every client.
- Plan on a Sunday for the week ahead.
- Set up an online accounting system.
Etc., etc., etc.
It seemed foolproof, but year after year, I found myself in the same spot. Nothing changed. Sound familiar?
The Turning Point Here’s what I realised: Instead of focusing on what I wanted to achieve, FIRST I needed to focus on why I hadn’t achieved it before. I needed to look back at the previous year and reflect on what worked, what didn’t, what I enjoyed, and what sucked my energy...
When I looked closer, I found the real reasons:
- Was it a personal block?
- Did I need to re-prioritise my time?
- Did I need help identifying what was really holding me back?
This shift changed everything. Instead of forcing myself to “be more organised,” I worked on the reason I wasn’t organised. And guess what? Suddenly, things started to stick.

Your Challenge for 2025 If there’s a resolution that you’ve struggled with before, take some time to reflect on the why behind it:
- What’s stopped you in the past?
- Is there a block you need to address first?
- Do you need support to uncover the deeper reason?
Working on this will have a far bigger impact than setting the same goal year after year.
Here’s to Lasting Change You don’t need to wait for New Year’s to start fresh. But if you’re feeling ready to make 2025 the year of working on the right things, I’m here to help you every step of the way.
Cheers to that—and to you!
