Women entrepreneurs, 20 years ago our current businesses couldn’t have existed.
When I started my coaching business 8 years ago, I spent the first year working face to face with clients in my local area.
It involved a lot of driving, rushing around to fit in nursery drop-offs, praying that I wouldn’t get a phone call saying my son needed to be collected early (back to back ear infections in his first Winter at nursery meant this happened often 😭).
Then in 2015 I remember watching a webinar that talked about online business, working with clients remotely using this thing called Zoom, and creating scaled offers like courses and online programs to generate ‘sleepcoin’... IYKYK 😜
I know we use the 🤯 emoji quite a bit, but it was actually like my brain had exploded. I didn’t sleep at all that night because my mind was on fire with the possibility of opening up a global market for my coaching services without even having to leave the house.
Ever since that moment, I’ve felt like I’m living out the future of work for women.
I’ve been able to:
✅ Generate hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue
✅ Use minimal amounts of childcare because I am home all the time
✅ Be present for my then toddler (hello cot naps!)
✅ Continue working at a gentle pace during my subsequent pregnancy in 2017, and not even have to disclose it until I was letting clients know I would be taking a pause for a few weeks to give birth
✅ Not need a maternity allowance because I was already generating my own income at a higher rate
✅ Return to work 3 weeks after the birth when I felt like I was ready - on my terms
✅ Create a pace to life-based on my natural energy levels with maximum time out to recharge and reflect
✅ Most of all, I’ve been able to work with women all over the world and work at my highest level despite being in my ‘child-bearing years’
I’m aware as I write this that it has been a huge privilege.

But I want to be clear that I didn’t have a wealthy husband bank-rolling me.
It often didn’t feel like a roaring success - there were a lot of hard times, feeling tired to my bones, unsure if we would be ok financially that month, unsure if I was insane to do something so unconventional and untested.
Self-employment isn’t for the faint-hearted and it also isn’t for everyone.
But I’m incredibly thankful that having had a really difficult experience of pregnancy at work/maternity leave the first time around, I was able to rewrite my story.
This is the future of work for women.
More freedom - because we have enough agency to be able to generate wealth independently of an employer.
More choice - because it isn’t ‘do this or do nothing’ when it comes to HOW, WHEN and WHERE we work.
Better quality of life - for us as individuals and for our families - because we aren’t having to rush around to fulfill contracted hours ‘in the office’.
This isn’t limited to women balancing work and motherhood. As you’ll know if you’re a regular to my content or you listen to my podcast, I experienced chronic illness and burnout in the workplace before I even had my children.
Women consultants, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders - what is your self-employment story? What do you see as the future of work for women?
