Your Primary Task in the #JobSearch

Your Primary Task in the #JobSearch

I did a video a week or two back about comparing the #Interview process to a Sales Cycle, where I broke it down into 4 steps:

-         Understanding the hiring team’s project

-         Qualifying the opportunity (understanding the problem)

-         Selling yourself as the solution

-         Closing them on hiring you OR moving you forwards in the process

However, I did take one step for granted and failed to mention it – in fact, the most IMPORTANT step in the #JobSearch process, let alone the #Interview. The one step which precedes all other steps. Without this CRUCIAL step, no other could be possible, it’s the One Ring to rule them all!

“Dean – enough with the dramatics, tell us what it is!”

Okay, fine. The most important part of the #JobSearch process, whether you’re conscious of it or not, is GETTING ATTENTION! Get their attention in order to get in front of them.

What’s the purpose of your resume? To get attention – which leads to a phone call, interview request, etc.

Why do you reach out to #Recruiters? To get their attention and see if they can help me.

What do you need to do to get in front of #Recruiters, Hiring Managers, WHOEVER? You need to get their attention in such a way that they want to meet you.

What’s the whole point of going to a professional networking event? To get in front of the right people and get their attention.

What’s the whole point of LinkedIn? To connect, put out content, comments, interactions that will get the attention of the right people!

It all comes down to getting the attention of the right people – keyword “getting attention”.

In fact, especially in the early stages of your #JobSearch – that stage where you’re still trying to get in front of people but are unsuccessful, it usually means you might not be doing enough to get attention from the marketplace. Are you making enough introductory phone calls, emails, social media messages, etc?

Phone, email, social media, networking events, posting content on LinkedIn, sharing articles, commenting on posts, submitting your resume/application, etc etc – these are all tools you can use to get attention from the right people who can help you at some point in your #JobSearch.

So – always keep in mind, when you’re not getting any responses asking for #Interviews during those initial stages of your #JobSearch, ask yourself: Am I doing enough to get the attention of the right people?

Question: What are some methods and tactics YOU use to get the attention of the right people and get in front of them during your #JobSearch?

Wishing you the best in your #JobSearch!
