I’m truly honored to be recognized by the Embassy of Dominican Republic in Guyana as a distinguished Dominican living in Guyana. This recognition is meaningful not just for me, but for the values that have shaped my journey. Growing up with both Dominican and Puerto Rican roots has ingrained in me core principles that are central to my personal and professional life: service, community resilience, solidarity, and perseverance. These values, combined with the opportunities my heritage provides—such as gaining a global perspective, access to quality education, and being surrounded by inspiring minds—have played a pivotal role in shaping who I am today. Being part of these two vibrant cultures has taught me that success is never individual, but always collective. It's about lifting each other up, fostering connections, and working tirelessly toward a common goal. As Guyana Country Director for the Arnhold Institute for Global Health at the Mount Sinai Health System, I am proud to apply these principles in my work with the Ministry of Health, where we are modernizing and strengthening the national healthcare system. I am grateful for this recognition, but even more so for the chance to contribute to a cause that is close to my heart: building healthier, more resilient communities. #Gratitude #Service #CommunityResilience #Solidarity #Perseverance #HealthcareLeadership #DominicanPride #PuertoRicanPride #BuildingStrongerCommunities
🇩🇴 #DominicanosDestacados #OrgulloDominicano

Check out today’s persuasive case in The Lancet for professional Community Health Workers, who are salaried, skilled and supplied. “For decades, proCHWs have shown their ability to save lives, enhance resilience, and support healthy economies,” writes Dr. Madeleine Ballard of the Arnhold Institute for Global Health and Community Health Impact Coalition. “Now is the moment for boldness that can reshape health care for generations.” Read the comment in The Lancet this #UHCDay! https://lnkd.in/eYD7Uccn #ProCHWs #UniversalHealthCoverage #HealthForAll

Faith was the first child that I lost from HIV right in front of my eyes. I remember Faith just as you see her in this picture, sitting next to her mother on a rusting metal bed on the pediatrics ward of the hospital where I work in Kenya. When Faith came into the pediatric ward of the hospital, she was four years old and weighed only 11 pounds. Most babies weigh 11 pounds before they are four months old. Faith was four YEARS old. Her mother was pleased they had finally gotten to the referral hospital, but Faith was too sick. I suspected from my exam that she had AIDS without doing any tests, but the tests confirmed my fears. Faith died 2 days after she was admitted to our wards. I had given her mother a copy of this picture I took of the two of them, and when Faith died, her mother thanked me over and over for this picture. She did not have any other pictures of her daughter. Faith's mother was so grateful, and I felt terrible. I felt like I hardly did anything. After all, I didn’t save her daughter. Every year when we celebrate World AIDS Day on December 1, I remember Faith. I remember her, not just because she was the first patient I lost to HIV, but I remember and honor and celebrate her because December 1 was her BIRTHDAY. Faith should be 24 years old today, on World AIDS Day, December 1 of 2024. There is a gap in my heart every year on World AIDS Day for Faith, who should be having a birthday, and for all of the children we lose every year to HIV. Faith’s story is a story about what it means to be able to access the healthcare and treatment that one needs. We have the medicines to treat HIV. We have the medicines to prevent a baby from being infected with HIV. We have the medicines to stop HIV from spreading from 1 sexual partner to another. AIDS is not over. HIV is not over. There are millions of people living with HIV today – and millions more who have died from HIV. Please to honor them today -- and remember that it does not need to be this way. Almost 2 million adolescents are living with HIV right now, but only half of them get HIV treatment. We still lose almost 100,000 children a year to HIV – children just like Faith. And HIV remains one of the top 3 causes of death for adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa. AIDS is not over. We need to raise our voices to demand treatment and access to the medical care – in every part of the world – that would end the HIV epidemic. That’s our call for collective action for World AIDS Day 2024.
