Themed “Rethinking Plastic: Building Resilient Communities and Ecosystems in PNG”, this groundbreaking event brought together global leaders, experts, and changemakers to tackle one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. 🌊✨ 🗣 A Call to Action: The seminar focused on raising awareness of plastic pollution’s devastating impacts on PNG’s biodiversity, health, and economy. It also explored transformative strategies, including partnerships and local innovations, to address waste management and implement the Plastic Pollution Treaty in PNG. Notably, this event coincided with global treaty negotiations in Busan, South Korea, underscoring the urgency of united global efforts to reduce plastic production by 40% by 2040. 🌍🤝 🌟 Inspiring Leadership: H.E. Choi Jongho, South Korean Ambassador to PNG, commended PNG's leadership in banning single-use plastics and called for stronger collaboration inspired by Korea’s success in waste management. His words were a rallying cry: “Although PNG contributes just 1.3% of global plastic waste, its impact is significant. Let us combine efforts to secure a sustainable future!” Ms. Debra Sungi, Acting Managing Director of Climate Change and Development Authority - Papua New Guinea, highlighted the urgency of partnerships, policies, and innovative solutions to address the 282 tons of daily plastic waste harming PNG’s marine ecosystems and rural livelihoods. 💡 Key Highlights: A vibrant panel discussion explored local and global approaches to plastic pollution, featuring insights from government officials, waste management experts, and private sector leaders.
