Economist - Circular Economy and Sustainable Development

Last Friday I had the absolute privilege of attending a stakeholder workshop in Tarawa, the capital of the beautiful island nation of Kiribati 🇰🇮 As a very remote small island 🏝️ developing state (SIDS) in the middle of the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and Australia, Kiribati is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to the impacts of climate change 🌏🔥. At the workshop, I listened as participants identified coastal erosion, droughts and salinization and pollution of soils and groundwater, not just as environmental issues but existential threats to the country and i-Kiribati people and their unique culture. 😞 These environmental issues are are not future risks but things that are happening right now to a country that has done so very little to contribute to climate change but is paying the highest possible price. 😞 Thus, I’m so pleased to be involved in supporting the Government of Kiribati 🇰🇮 to develop an Environment Fund that will aim to help finance 🏦solutions and initiatives that will help this wonderful Atoll nation 🏝️ address some of its most pressing environmental concerns and in turn will also help address the many other health, social and economic issues which adversely affect the lives of the lovely people living here. Having previously lived for many years in the UAE 🇦🇪, I’ve seen there are many amazing innovations to tackle degraded soils, address water shortages and protect coastlines and I hope that, with the development of the Environment Fund, some of these technologies and knowledge can be transferred here. Collaboration is going to be key to the success of an Environment Fund, so would love to hear any ideas or advice that those in my network may wish to pass on either about establishing Environment Funds or in supporting SIDS like Kiribati address its multiple issues. I want to thank my GGGI Pacific colleagues Walter Malau and Ross Craven and our wonderful I-Kiribati consultant Tekateteke Metai and of course all the fantastic individuals that participated in the workshop- I can’t wait to see how the Fund develops!! 🤩 Also very grateful to New Zealand 🇳🇿 and Ireland 🇮🇪 for funding this wonderful project under the Low Emission Climate Resilient Development (LECRD) programme I manage 😊

🌍 Uniting for a Sustainable Tomorrow: PNG and Korea Take Bold Steps to Combat Plastic Pollution! 🌱 December 2, 2024, marked a pivotal moment in the fight against plastic pollution as the Embassy of the Republic of Korea 🇰🇷 and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) successfully hosted the Climate Action Seminar in Port Moresby, PNG. Themed “Rethinking Plastic: Building Resilient Communities and Ecosystems in PNG”, this groundbreaking event brought together global leaders, experts, and changemakers to tackle one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. 🌊✨ 🗣 A Call to Action: The seminar focused on raising awareness of plastic pollution’s devastating impacts on PNG’s biodiversity, health, and economy. It also explored transformative strategies, including partnerships and local innovations, to address waste management and implement the Plastic Pollution Treaty in PNG. Notably, this event coincided with global treaty negotiations in Busan, South Korea, underscoring the urgency of united global efforts to reduce plastic production by 40% by 2040. 🌍🤝 🌟 Inspiring Leadership: H.E. Choi Jongho, South Korean Ambassador to PNG, commended PNG's leadership in banning single-use plastics and called for stronger collaboration inspired by Korea’s success in waste management. His words were a rallying cry: “Although PNG contributes just 1.3% of global plastic waste, its impact is significant. Let us combine efforts to secure a sustainable future!” Ms. Debra Sungi, Acting Managing Director of Climate Change and Development Authority - Papua New Guinea, highlighted the urgency of partnerships, policies, and innovative solutions to address the 282 tons of daily plastic waste harming PNG’s marine ecosystems and rural livelihoods. 💡 Key Highlights: A vibrant panel discussion explored local and global approaches to plastic pollution, featuring insights from government officials, waste management experts, and private sector leaders. Among the key takeaways: 1️⃣ Grassroots Action: Community engagement is critical. Simple, accessible solutions empower change. 2️⃣ Accountability: Manufacturers must take responsibility for their products’ life cycle. 3️⃣ Innovation: From turning plastics into road materials to cutting-edge recycling technologies, creativity drives progress. 4️⃣ Partnerships: Collaboration across governments, NGOs, and businesses is non-negotiable. 👩🔧 Empowering Communities: Special emphasis was placed on empowering women and communities in waste collection and recycling, creating both economic opportunities and environmental stewardship. 🌿 Looking Ahead: This seminar reaffirms PNG and Korea’s shared commitment to a greener future through knowledge-sharing, innovation, and action. It’s a reminder that together, we can rethink plastics, protect ecosystems, and build resilience. 💚 The time to act is now. Let’s champion sustainability and create lasting change for our planet. 🌏♻

🌍 GGGI is excited to release our latest technical report: "Identifying Good Practices in National Adaptation Plans: A Global Review." This in-depth analysis, conducted in collaboration with the partners, examines National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) submitted to the UNFCCC, using a framework that covers 7 key areas: Goals, Participation, Fact Base, Policy, Implementation, Finance, and Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E). The report highlights both strengths and weaknesses across these areas. It finds Finance to be the weakest link, with only 38% of good practice elements included, while Fact Base, Policy, and Implementation show stronger representation, with at least two-thirds of good practices covered. In addition to assessing the current state of NAPs, the report offers valuable insights and actionable recommendations to improve adaptation planning and foster peer-to-peer learning among countries. 🌱 Explore best practices and discover how to strengthen climate resilience through more effective NAPs.  🔗 Read the full report here: https://bit.ly/41eNMtE #ClimateAdaptation #NAPs #ClimateResilience #NDC #ClimateAction Shivenes Shammugam GGGI Africa GGGI Latin America & the Caribbean GGGI Pacific GGGI MENA GGGI Viet Nam GGGI Cambodia GGGI India

🌍 The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) participated in the 39th South Pacific Governors' Meeting in Nadi, Fiji last week focusing on sustainable finance and climate resilience. Governor Ariff Ali of the Reserve Bank of Fiji opened the meeting with a powerful statement: "Climate change is an existential threat to our region. Central banks have a pivotal role in aligning our financial systems with sustainability goals to support climate actions and long-term resilience." Led by Regional Director-Pacific Katerina Syngellakis, GGGI's delegation engaged with central bank leaders from across the Pacific, including Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, PNG, Samoa, Tonga, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu. They discussed progress on the Greening the Pacific Financial System (GPFS) programme, funded by Agence Française de Développement, and explored new ways to accelerate sustainable finance initiatives. A key outcome was the Governors' endorsement of GPFS’s 2025 workplan, demonstrating a strong collective commitment to sustainable finance in the Pacific region. 🌱 For more details: https://lnkd.in/e-bapv4u #GGGI #SustainableFinance #ClimateResilience #GreeningThePacific #PacificGovernors #ClimateAction #SustainabilityGoals #GreenGrowth #GGGIinAction #ClimateChange
