Today at AOW: Investing in African Energy #AOW2024 conference, the Atlantis Special Economic Zone CEO ,Matthew Cullinan, joined a key panel discussion on Accelerating Africa’s Mineral Resources and Value Chains as part of the Upstream & Energy Track Deep Dive Session. Moderated by Deshan Naidoo, CEO of afrivolt, and alongside panelists like Joel Sanon, The African Legal Support Facility, and others, the panel focused on unlocking economic opportunities for the green economy, with a spotlight on critical and battery minerals value chains. Matthew highlighted how Special Economic Zones (SEZs), like the Atlantis SEZ, play a crucial role in building local manufacturing capabilities, driving innovation, and serving as industrial sandboxes. This approach not only supports the beneficiation of Africa’s minerals but also helps unlock the potential of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), boosting economic growth and sustainability across the continent.

Deshan Naidoo recently represented Afrivolt at the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (#FOCAC) in #Beijing and the #BeltandRoad Summit in #HongKong where his presentations on developing Africa's battery industry were extremely well received. Deshan was also invited to join H.E. President Cyril Ramaphosa's Business Delegation during his official state visit to #China, further strengthening our opportunities in the region. When asked about progress in 2024, he said: "We have dedicated a substantial portion of the year to study tours and site visits around the world. I feel fortunate to have built relationships with some of the most innovative companies in this industry and I believe we are now well-positioned to make meaningful commitments." The NTCSA has just released its 2024 South African Renewable Energy Grid Survey, which has several strategic implications: 1. Urgent Need for Grid Expansion: The doubling of indicated capacity from 66GW (2023) to 133GW underscores the need for rapid grid expansion and upgrades to avoid bottlenecks and ensure that new projects can be connected without delay. 2. Focus on Storage Solutions: The growing role of BESS highlights the need for Eskom and other stakeholders to develop clear strategies for integrating storage into the grid, particularly for ancillary services. 3. Regional Development: The geographical distribution of projects suggests that certain regions, particularly the Northern Cape, will require targeted infrastructure investments to handle the expected growth in renewable energy capacity. 4. Policy and Regulatory Adjustments: As the private sector and municipalities take on a larger role in renewable energy development, there may be a need for policy adjustments to facilitate these projects and ensure they can be integrated into the national grid efficiently. 5. International Benchmarking: The survey team noted that there are few comparable surveys internationally, highlighting the unique position of South Africa in pioneering collaborative, industry-wide grid planning.
