About us

Sol Plaatje University is one of two universities created in the democratic era. We are critically engaged in learning, research, and development, while enhancing democratic practice and social justice in society. During our first seven years of existence, we have successfully positioned ourselves to be: - A site of learning, research, and culture where we endeavour towards excellence and embedded in quality academic process. - An engaged social participant which gives expression to democratic practice, seized with the challenges facing society, and enable participation in social, cultural, and economic life. - A knowledge economy leader that facilitates knowledge for development and economic advancement locally, regionally, and nationally. - A university in Africa that is integrally connected to African issues and engages in projecting knowledge globally. We have established ourselves as a scientific centre for data and analytics; as a seat for humanities that stands out in the fields of heritage, anthropology, archaeology and African languages as a node in teacher education across all phases, with a specialisation in mathematics, language teaching and curriculum development. We are also an emerging hub for management sciences and entrepreneurship. We offer undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications in Economic & Management Sciences, Education, Humanities and Natural & Applied Sciences.

  • THE ROLE OF STUDENT LEADERS   Day two of the GENXT Leaders Programme commenced with the SRC participating in various team building activities with a focus on multitasking, time management, listening, dedication, focus, teamwork and developing a common purpose.   Ms Nicole Morris, Dean of Student Affairs, provided the SRC with an overview of the Institutional Strategy developed for 2025-2029. She said that “the Strategic Plan is intentionally student-centric, underpinned by student engagement. This leaders programme is not only an opportunity to become effective student leaders but to become a leader for life.” She urged the SRC to provide guidance to the student community and ensure an integrated experience during their academic careers so that SPU can produce holistic graduates.   Later in the day the participants examined the role of a leader in the global context. Emphasis was placed on how to navigate through the complexities of societies, cultures, economies, governance, and environmental sustainability. Through collaboration, innovation, research and fostering inclusivity and diversity, student leaders can think critically, engage, and positively contribute to impactful and sustainable solutions at the University and to the local and global community.   The day concluded with a special dinner at which the SPU delegation was joined by the Dean of the School of Business at the African Leadership University (ALU), Professor Momar Dieng. He shared historical insights about the inception of ALU, its vision, purpose, and future. He further indicated the ALU’s interest in collaborative endeavours with SPU.
