Identifies, trains and connects high potential very young African entrepreneurs (15 to 22 years old).

About us

The Anzisha Prize celebrates and supports Africa’s youngest, most innovative entrepreneurs, between the ages of 15-22, who have created successful business ventures or social projects across the continent. Each year, 25 incredible young people are selected as Anzisha Fellows – young leaders with growing businesses who can be role models to a new generation. The stories of these entrepreneurs must be documented, celebrated, and shared. We call it the #AnzishaEffect, and it is the power of stories about the very youngest entrepreneurs among us to encourage others to follow in their footsteps in every corner of the continent. Africa needs strong, innovative entrepreneurial young leaders to create jobs, solve problems and drive our economies. Our continent’s future will be determined by entrepreneurial leaders across all sectors. We believe fundamentally in the power of youth-led change. The Anzisha Prize in collaboration with the African Leadership Academy and The MasterCard Foundation, not only seeks to support young entrepreneurs but the ecosystem around youth entrepreneurship in Africa. Each year, 25 fellows join our three-year venture-building program. Throughout their three years, fellows receive high-touch support, participate in skills development workshops, participate in experiential learning opportunities and earn biannual cash stipends. At the end of their second year, fellows stand a chance to win one of four grand prizes, each valued at $10 000. Anzisha Fellows are supported for life as part of African Leadership Academy’s approach to youth development. Mentorship, consulting and community gatherings become part of the fellow experience in the years that follow as they grow their business ventures from strength the strength. The Anzisha Fellow program helps them become the best they can be!

  • "I hope my journey inspires more women, especially young girls, to believe in their power to create change - no matter how big or small it is." - Jackline Birungi. Our final entrepreneur in the spotlight for our #WomenEntrepreneurshipSeries is 2024 Anzisha Fellow, Jackline Birungi. Jackline is the 21 year old founder of She Deserves, a social enterprise which seeks to provide a natural pain relief alternative for menstrual cramps. After battling with her health due to painkiller usage in treating her severe menstrual pain, Jackline recognised the need for a non-harmful relief option for other Ugandan girls affected similarly. With the prevalence of school absence among young girls due to severe menstrual pain, She Deserves offers a safe alternative to painkillers in alleviating menstrual cramps and is helping to prevent more girls from missing school during their periods. For us, this #GlobalEntrepreneurshipWeek serves as a reminder that the achievements of individuals contribute to the collective success of many - and this is why it is so vital for young women to take their opportunities, pitch their ideas, and start their businesses. #GEW2024 #Anzisha #Entrepreneurship #EntrepreurshipEducation #Education #EntrepreneurshipSupport #YoungEntrepreneurs #Leadership #FutureOfWork #JobCreators #CareerPath

“In Uganda, pig production has dramatically increased over the last three decades owing to the growing demand for pork (Ouma et al., 2017). Estimates show the national pig population in the country in 2018 was 4.47 million pigs produced by 1.34 million households (UBOS, 2021)” - Frontiers Jesca Nayebare (an The Anzisha Prize Fellow) and her Co-founder are based out of Mpigi District, Uganda where they operate FARMPLUS. They produce high quality animal feed protein supplement formulated for pigs and chickens - and I had the absolute privilege to visit their facility last week. The demand for their product is high , and increasing, due to the results their clients have seen and then abbatoirs further along the value chain are noticing also. Exciting times ahead. The picture on the right is the product before the final stage of processing, then it’s bagged. Inspired by what Jesca and her team has done thus far. Young entrepreneurs in Africa are worth backing - early. #entrepreneurship #youngentrepreneurs #africandevelopment #venfurepartner

  • Next up in our #WomenEntrepreneurshipSeries; meet 2023 Anzisha Fellow Esther Uzodinma. Esther describes her entrepreneurship journey as being lifelong - she recalls braiding her sister's hair and selling sweets to other children at school to make extra cash. Where it truly began, however, is with a makeup competition in 2015 where she showcased her talent and determination. Inspired by the experience, she participated in the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards before founding her own company, EST Productions. Esther's goal is to continue building her foundation and growing her businesses. We asked Esther a few questions about her experience as an entrepreneur, and what advice she has for other young women who, like her, dare to dream. #GlobalEntrepreneurshipWeek #GEW2024 #Anzisha #Entrepreneurship #EntrepreurshipEducation #Education #EntrepreneurshipSupport #YoungEntrepreneurs #Leadership #FutureOfWork #JobCreators

  • #GlobalEntrepreneurshipWeek is a campaign that celebrates and empowers entrepreneurs in every country and community around the world – especially young entrepreneurs who face structural barriers. In light of this and in recognition of the huge strides that dozens of young African women have taken as part of the growing Anzisha community, we're excited to spotlight a few of our very own who are changing the world with their businesses and ventures. Today Ayanda Mngomezulu, a law student, entrepreneur and 2024 Anzisha Fellow steps into the spotlight of our #WomenEntreprenuershipSeries. She grew up learning the value of diverse income sources from her father, who had a hiring business where people rented, tables and chairs from him on the weekends. It is her family's entrepreneurial spirit that inspired her to launch Aesthetic Dosage, her clothing business. “Philanthropic impact investors like elea possess a higher risk appetite and provide patient capital because achieving impact is our primary goal, all while ensuring that we invest in viable businesses,” states Lisa Jean-Mairet, who leads the elea Africa Hub in Johannesburg. In this video, Lisa Jean-Mairet and Ijangolet “Ija” Ogwang present our investment approach to participants at the Anzisha Summit, organized by African Leadership Academy (ALA), during a breakout session. Attendees also had the opportunity to explore our investment mandate and gained hands-on experience evaluating an impact venture through elea’s unique perspective. We are thrilled to support The Anzisha Prize, an ALA initiative dedicated to significantly increasing the number of job-generating entrepreneurs in Africa. This initiative identifies, trains, and connects ambitious young entrepreneurs under the age of 23, empowering them with the leadership skills needed to build successful businesses. Through our partnership with ALA, we continue to expand our contribution to the African ecosystem by supporting the education of the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs.
