Celebrating World Toilet Day and Global Handwashing Day with Zimbabwe’s Future Leaders! Our recent events in Shamva (at Jiti Primary School) and Zvimba District (at Maquadzi Primary School) brought students, teachers, and community members together to raise awareness about the importance of WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) in schools. We were celebrating, belatedly, World Toilet Day and Global Handwashing Day. With the participation of district and provincial stakeholders, and resource support from charity: water, we enjoyed powerful messages from students through dramas, music, art, and poetry. It is inspiring to see young people take the lead in promoting hygiene practices that contribute to their health and well-being. Congratulations to the talented students who received prizes for their outstanding performances! We’re grateful to all partners who helped make these events impactful. Together, we are working toward a future where every child has clean water, and safe and sustainable sanitation resources. #WASHinSchools #GlobalHandwashingDay #WorldToiletDay #WASH

As the rains begin to fall in Zimbabwe, smallholder farmers are busy preparing their fields and starting to plant. Most rural farmers practice conservation agriculture through a practice called Pfumvudza or Intwasa. It promotes the efficient production of different crop varieties like maize and the more resilient traditional grains or small grains. This season, we’re encouraged by the resilience and dedication of our farmers as they work tirelessly toward a more food-secure future. Welthungerhilfe (WHH) remains committed to supporting Zimbabwean communities in advancing sustainable agricultural practices that contribute to the global goal of zero hunger. Through knowledge-sharing, partnerships, and unwavering support, we’re fostering food security for generations to come. Let’s celebrate the hard work of smallholder farmers and wish them a bountiful season ahead! #ZeroHunger #FoodSystemsTransformation #SustainableAgriculture

We're proud of the impact being made through our food systems transformation project in Mutoko and Mudzi districts in partnership with Bio Innovation Zimbabwe: BIZ and funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Last week, we hosted a food festival in Mudzi, celebrating the power of indigenous crops and the ingenuity of smallholder women farmers. With traditional music, cooking demos, and competitions, the festival showcased how indigenous varieties can create inclusive and profitable food systems. A special congratulations to the winners of the cooking competition—what a fantastic display of creativity and skill!

Today is #WorldHumanitarianDay. As a part of Welthungerhilfe (WHH), we are joining the United Nations OCHA, other humanitarian organisations and the rest of the global community in demanding the protection of civilians and humanitarians in war zones. Despite international laws in place to protect them, they continue to be killed, injured and abducted. Celebrating humanitarian workers isn't enough. Add your voice: call on those in power to #ActForHumanity!

We are glad to have the opportunity to improve access to this precious resource, with the support of partners like charity: water. Thanks to Maricho Media for a spotlight on the work we are doing to provide communities in Zimbabwe with water under the Rural WASH project.

We have joined the world alliance for breastfeeding action and the global community is celebrating World Breastfeeding Week. These are the first seven days of every August that are set aside every year to shine a light on the critical importance of breastfeeding for the survival, health, and well-being of mothers and children. The theme for 2024 is "Closing the Gap. Breastfeeding Support for All". It underscores the need to address inequalities in breastfeeding support, with a particular focus on times of emergencies and crises. As Welthungerhilfe (WHH) we are committed to supporting breastfeeding through our #ZeroHunger work in WASH, emergency response, and food and nutrition security globally and in Zimbabwe. We believe that by providing comprehensive breastfeeding support, we can help close the gap and create a healthier, more equitable world. Join us in advocating for better breastfeeding support to ensure that all mothers have the resources and guidance they need. Together, we can make a difference! "I'm glad to be in a rural community where people are no longer practising open defecation". The Permanent Secretary for Matabeleland South Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Mrs Latiso Dlamini Maseko, shared these sentiments at the celebration of the ODF status achieved by Mtshabezi Village in Gwanda. The milestone comes under the European Union-funded ERVHIZ project which has seen the government of Zimbabwe working with UNICEF Zimbabwe, FAO, Welthungerhilfe (WHH), Nutrition Action Zimbabwe, and Sustainable Agriculture Technology Zimbabwe to build resilience in vulnerable communities.

The 2023-2024 season has been plagued by a drought that has exposed millions of people in Zimbabwe and the rest of Southern Africa to extreme hunger. Welthungerhilfe (WHH) is working in partnership with the Farm Community Trust of Zimbabwe and Mvuramanzi Trust to reduce the impacts of the drought in Mashonaland Central. Our Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany-funded anticipatory action project is doing this by providing water and livestock support to 400 households. This article sheds light on these efforts. https://lnkd.in/dFA8KPKB #Drought #ZeroHunger
