Hidden hydropower (untapped potential of drinking water distribution systems, waste water treatment plants or irrigation channels) might play an important role not only Europe. I was happy to be a moderator of the round table on water-energy nexus in these systems with three distinguished speakers: Giovanna Cavazzini (leader of H-HOPE project on energy harvesting from water currents), Tullio Tucciarelli (professor of hydraulic engineering with longtime expertise in pump-as-turbines) and Miguel Crespo Chacón (CTO of company Easy Hydro exploiting the hidden hydropower potential with PaT installations)
🔋 Unlocking Hidden Hydropower PEN@Hydropower hosted a round table in Barcelona, bringing together experts to explore the untapped potential of hidden hydropower in water networks. Organized under WG2: Technology Innovations & Digitalisation in Hydropower, the event showcased innovative ways to generate renewable energy from existing water infrastructure. 📢 Key Speakers: Tullio Tucciarelli (University of Palermo): Highlighted hidden hydropower in water networks, sharing an exciting case study from Sicily. Miguel Crespo Chacon (EasyHydro, CTO): Explored how to generate energy from water pipes, focusing on digitalized hybrid systems. Giovanna Cavazzini (University of Padova, H-HOPE Project Leader): Discussed energy harvesting in water distribution systems, emphasising low-power solutions for powering sensors. Pavel Rudolf (Brno University of Technology, DIWIEN Project): Discussed hidden hydropower potential in municipal networks. The round table demonstrated the immense potential of hidden hydropower to contribute to Europe’s renewable energy targets, using existing infrastructure in innovative ways. 🌟 Excited to see these discussions pave the way increasing our understanding of hidden hydropower! 🌍 Amazing meeting with Working Group members of PEN@Hydropower in London to explore GHG emissions from hydropower reservoirs! 💧 The Working Group 3 thematic workshop on GHG emissions, organised by Open Hydro as part of the PEN@Hydropower aimed to advance research on this critical issue. Addressing GHG emissions is key to ensuring hydropower plays its part in the clean energy transition and helps the EU meet its 2050 net-zero targets. 🫧 Key takeaways included: 🔷 Global GHG emissions from hydropower reservoirs remain highly uncertain. 🔷 Current methods rely on empirical models that require site-specific adjustments, raising concerns about their broader applicability. 🔷 Machine learning shows promise in closing data gaps and enhancing research. 🔷 Each case study offers insights, but generalizing findings across different contexts remains challenging. As a result, we’ve identified 8 key research questions for WG3 Task 1 on GHG emissions, guiding future efforts. Check the comments for more info if you're interested in joining!👇 A big thank you to all the participants, especially those who traveled to London, for your dedication.
