Would you like to research GHG emissions with Open Hydro for a month in London? The 5th Call for Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSM) and Virtual Mobility (VM) funded by the EU PEN@Hydropower project is open! Do not miss the opportunity to conduct scientific missions at a different research institution and strengthen the collaboration. STSMs participants must contribute to the scientific objectives of the PEN@Hydropower project. Their work will focus on research topics highlighted by the action workgroup. Participants can look at the proposed topics in the downloadable info pack. TOPICS: - Assessing the impact of flexibility on machine lifetime  - Analysis of refurbishment projects of small hydropower plants to allow variable speed operation  - Review of energy storage system with special emphasis on pump turbines - GHG emissions from reservoirs  - Quantitative analyses of precipitation, discharge variability, and understanding hydrological safety of hydropower  - Role of hydropower in the hybridisation of variable renewable energy sources  - Social acceptance and controversies in hydropower STEPS: 📧 Contact the host institution supervisor of your interest topic. The latest call for applications for Inclusive Target Countries Conference Grants (ITCCGs), Short Term Scientific Missions (STSMs), and Dissemination and Communication Grants (DCGs) is now open! 📆 STSM grants offer participants the chance to collaborate and gather data at research institutions in other COST countries. ITC and DC grants support attendance at international conferences and events, fostering networking and knowledge-sharing among researchers, PhD students, and innovators. 🌊🔬 Celebrating International Day of Women and Girls in Science! 🚀💡 📕In the ESMAP - Energy Sector Management Assistance Program/The World Bank study, published end-2023 claimed that the reasons fewer women pursue STEM degrees were mainly cultural—girls are still less likely to be encouraged to show an interest in technology than boys. Women make up just 25% of the global hydropower workforce—more than oil & gas (22%) but still behind the renewable energy average (32%). And while progress is happening, we still see significant gender gaps: ⚡ Underrepresentation in technical & leadership roles ⚡ Slower and less frequent promotions for women ⚡ Different perceptions of gender equality—many men believe opportunities and pay are equal, while most women report the opposite 👩🔬 So, where do we start? Encouraging more girls to pursue STEM education is critical: 📚 Only 20–30% of STEM students and 15–20% of engineering students are women. 💡 Cultural norms still discourage girls from exploring technology fields. Hydropower—and the energy sector as a whole—thrives on diverse perspectives and inclusive leadership. It's time to break barriers, challenge biases, and create opportunities for more women to enter and lead in this field. 💬 How can we make hydropower a more gender-inclusive industry?
