We now see 11 horticulture tree crop industries working together to establish a freely available national spatial database (map) of all commercial orchards greater than 1 ha. This is essential foundational information that directly underpins knowledge and decision making around industry extent, annual change, biosecurity and natural disaster response, traceability, forward selling, labour and infrastructure planning, water allocation, carbon, sustainability etc etc. Another step closer to providing all Australian Hort industries with this essential information :) Great work Craig Shephard , R. 📳 Early alert system for crop disease infection In an Aussie first, grain growers now have access to accurate, localised data to improve disease management through a project harnessing technology to track airborne disease spore movement. The 3-year, $3.6 million project aims to provide growers with earlier awareness on the presence of blackleg, botrytis, leaf blights and spots (alternaria species), cereal powdery mildew and general rust in their crops. The GRDC investment is led by BioScout with support from several research and commercial partners across Australia. Each year Hort Innovation releases the Australian Horticulture Statistics Handbook. It’s part of our focus to deliver data to growers and industry to inform decisions and increase profitability. Here’s the 11th edition: • Strong overall growth: The Australian horticulture industry achieved record production value in 2023/24, reaching $17 billion, a 4.3% ($696.1 million) from the previous year • Fruit sector growth: The fruit sector led growth, with production values increasing by $492.8 million (+7.8%) to reach $6.82 billion. This was driven by strong performances in berries, citrus, and bananas. • Vegetable sector challenges: While vegetable volumes increased, overall vegetable production value declined by 2.4% ($140.2 million) to $5.70 billion. • Nut sector recovery: The nut sector recovered off a difficult year in 2022/23, with production values increasing by $484 million (65.2%) in 2023/24, to reach $1.23 billion. • Export Growth: Australian horticulture exports reached a record high value of almost $3 billion, driven by strong growth in fruit exports, particularly citrus and avocados. Hats off to the team who lead this project Lucy Noble Martin Kneebone

Investors like GrainInnovate (Grains Research and Development Corporation), Hort Innovation & GrainCorp - investing in startups for both financial and strategic impact - are playing a critical role in developing a flourishing agtech economy in Australia. A big thank you to AgriFutures Australia on another fantastic EvokeAg event.
VC tailored for industry: a brave new world for RDCs 🚀 RDCs are playing a crucial role in the early stages of startup development, particularly by leveraging their networks to drive impact and support commercialisation. 👉 RDC-backed startups are benefitting from direct access to relevant producers and the opportunity to invest at an early stage, utilising national footprints and connections to raise the profile and awareness of emerging tech platforms. By focusing on people, capabilities, and assets, RDCs can add substantial value beyond just capital, considering broader benefits such as innovation impact and customer outcomes. 👉 Translating investor impact through data is key to showcasing what more can be achieved, with a clear understanding of the challenges faced and how to engage stakeholders across the supply chain to deliver value. Grower participation remains essential, and cross-industry collaboration, along with capital consolidation, will be pivotal in creating sustainable growth. Thank you to the panel for such a fantastic and engaging session!
