The Australian Federation of Air Pilots (AFAP) is a professional association and industrial organisation for commercial pilots in Australia. Founded in 1938, the AFAP aims to represent and promote the interests of Australian professional flight crew and to champion aviation safety standards. As an industrial organisation, we protect and improve employment conditions for our pilot members through assistance in negotiating enterprise agreements, representation in the event of a dispute with an employer, assistance in the event of an accident or incident, and expert advice on award and agreement matters. Our democratic structure allows members to be directly involved in the decision-making processes of the Federation, as well as their own workplace negotiations. Members are encouraged to participate in the issues affecting their workplace. Within larger enterprises, pilots have established their own councils - including Cobham, Eastern, Helicopters, Jetstar, National, Rex, Sunstate, Tigerair and Virgin - using the AFAP resources for industrial assistance or guidance. As a professional association, the AFAP provides a forum for commercial pilots to meet and discuss aviation related matters. The AFAP Women's Network and the New Wings program (for cadets and students) both offer further networking opportunities. The AFAP Safety & Technical team contributes expertise towards the development of Australian and international aviation safety standards and regularly makes submissions to Government to ensure the interests of our members are recognised. The IFALPA PGA (Professional & Government Affairs) Committee met in Nairobi, Kenya, hosted by KALPA. Attendees included members from OCCC, USA, Netherlands, SPA, Norway, Mexico, Colombia, Lebanon, Kenya, Uganda, Bahrain, Ethiopia, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, UK, Finland, Canada, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, ITF, and Germany. Among the critical topics covered were interoperability and wet leasing, ICAO Assembly 42, ATRP, future bargaining models, and the industrial situations specific to each Region. The FAA has reversed #notam terminology from the December 2021 'Notice to Air Missions' to the previous 'Notice to Airmen'. In 2021, the term was changed to be gender-neutral and to account for the growing number of #drone operations. The USAGOV agency's message simply states: “Effective immediately, the term Notice to Air Missions (Notam) is being changed to Notice to Airmen (Notam), and the title of FAA Order 7930.2 is being changed to ‘Notice to Airmen (Notam).’” It also orders that all directives and publications be updated “as soon as practicable.” Also, the Federal Aviation Administration is in the process of updating its data and charts to show a name change from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and a name change from Denali to Mount McKinley. #aviation https://lnkd.in/dgiF2-ww
Australian safety pioneer Dr Rob Lee AO coined the term #swisscheese to describe how the barriers in Prof James Reason’s theory contained metaphorical holes that opened, closed and moved. James Reason, the originator of the Swiss cheese theory of accident causation died on 5 February. He was 86 and had been in poor health. Reason’s theory was widely adopted in a range of high consequence industries, notably aviation. It was a practical and easily understandable expression of systems theory, which broadened attention from errors and supposed failings of individuals, to the design of the systems in which they operated. Australian travellers are being forced into long queues at the nation’s #airports because of failures with the digital #passport processing system, which is riddled with technical faults and failing to meet targets while facing cost surges of more than $120 million. The SmartGates system has been labelled embarrassing by the Australian Airports Association, which wants the federal government to urgently address the problems. The failures have caused queues at Melbourne Airport and Sydney Airport to snake through terminals, leaving tired passengers stranded in delays. When the system was introduced in 2015, authorities expected 90% of travellers to use automated passport scanning by 2020. However, internal Home Affairs data shows only 57% of inbound travellers use SmartGates. The system has been crippled by technical failures, even as the contract with one provider, IDEMIA, surged from $22m to $113m within five years. The roll-out has been coupled with a reduction in staffed processing desks, exacerbating delays during peak arrival times and technical outages. https://lnkd.in/gP5MHfe8

Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet collided in midair with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter while on approach to Runway 33 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport - DCA around 9 pm local time (GMT-5). PSA was operating as Flight 5342 for American Airlines. It departed from Wichita, Kansas. MONTREAL – The International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations (IFALPA) is closely monitoring the developments related to this morning's tragic accident of Jeju Air Flight 7C-2216, a Boeing 737-800 (reg. HL-8088) that overran the runway on landing at Muan International airport in the Republic of Korea. Our thoughts are with the friends and families of the reported 181 passengers and crew members that were onboard the aircraft. The Federation is working closely with its local Member Association, ALPA-K, who have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) of the Republic of Korea, with four IFALPA-accredited Accident Investigators from ALPA-K appointed as Official Advisors to MOLIT. Through this MoU, IFALPA will keep its accident investigation resources at the disposal of MOLIT to help gather facts and any other information which may be pertinent to the investigation. The Federation urges caution against speculation in media and social media surrounding the accident. IFALPA stresses the need to avoid any conjectures or suppositions as to what happened in this event. The investigation into the circumstances of the accident should strictly follow the provisions laid out in ICAO Annex 13 with conclusions and safety recommendations identified by the appropriate investigative bodies. https://lnkd.in/e8qdhZV3
