A New Way to Design CLT Diaphragms is Here! We’re excited to introduce a simple diaphragm calculator designed for quick, early-stage building designs. While FEA tools handle diaphragms and lateral stability well and comprehensively, our calculator offers a fast and intuitive way to model for early stage design for rectangular portions of buildings. This tool leverages the Substitute Deep Beam (Girder) Analogy, simplifying complex in-plane calculations while providing the detailed insights needed for accurate design. Some of the key features: - Joint Force Analysis: Analyze shear forces along joints and per fastener. - In-Plane Shear Check: Evaluate tension and compression within the diaphragm system for optimal design. - Dynamic Visuals: Select single or multiple diaphragms, adjust orientation in X or Y directions, and choose from various panel connection types, including spline, half-lap, and butt joints. - In-Plane Bending Strength: Accurately calculates the diaphragm's bending capacity. - In-Plane Stiffness: Ensures compliance with serviceability requirements. - Serviceability Checks - Output Summary: Consolidates in-plane bending, shear, deflection, tension, and compression checks. This new calculator is free until the end of the year, so go to CLT Toolbox if you want to check it out! #masstimber #clttoolbox

Södra is Now on CLT Toolbox! More massive news for the Swedish & European Market - Södra, Sweden's largest forest owners' association, has officially joined CLT Toolbox! Founded in 1938, Södra is renowned for its commitment to sustainable forestry and innovative forest products. Beyond forestry, Södra’s expertise extends to wood products, pulp, textile pulp, biofuels, tall oil, electricity, and district heating. Södra has emerged as one of the leaders in cross-laminated timber (CLT) production, championing the adoption of sustainable building materials. Their facility use fossil-free energy generated on-site, producing CLT panels with one of the lowest carbon footprints on the market. Over the course of 2024, we connected with Martin Eveborn & Daniel Anderson. Both of which have been enthusiastic supporters of our vision - with shared passion for driving infrastructure improvements for the industry. With the addition of the Swedish National Annex, Swedish language support, and Södra’s inclusion, it’s now easier than ever for Swedish engineers to design with CLT. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Södra for their collaboration as we work together to empower Swedish engineers to embrace mass timber design.

We've Launched 9 National Annexes onto CLT Toolbox 🚀. These are now in a brand new Floor Calculator! This calculator is by far the most popular on our platform and the one most engineers begins with. For the past 6 months, we’ve been completely overhauling it to add some incredible new features. A major upgrade on the new calculator is that you can now flexibly choose between 9 National Annexes. These include: BS EN (England): Users can select Equation 6.10 or Equations 6.10a and 6.10b for action combinations, and use Ψ1,1 for the main variable in accidental combinations. DK EN (Denmark): Action combinations are based on equations 6.10a and 6.10b by considering the effect of the consequence class of the system. Additionally, the level of checking options is used that influence the partial factor for the material, the phi (Ψ) factors for snow and wind loads are influenced by the mutual occurrence of variable loads, and use Ψ1,1 for the main variable in accidental (fire) combinations. DIN EN (Germany): Action combinations are based on equation 6.10, and use Ψ2,1 for the main variable in accidental combinations. SS EN (Sweden): Action combinations are based on equations 6.10a and 6.10b, and include a reliability class system that establishes partial safety coefficients for load combinations based on structural reliability. It also modifies snow load psi (Ψ) factors based on user-defined snow loads rather than altitude and uses Ψ1,1 for the main variable in accidental (fire) combinations. NEN EN (Netherlands): Uses equations 6.10a and 6.10b for action combinations and Ψ1,1 for the main variable in accidental (fire) combinations. NF EN (France): Action combinations are based on equation 6.10, and use Ψ1,1 for the main variable in accidental combinations. UNE EN (Spain): Action combinations are based on the EN 1990:2002 and the user has the option to select either Equation 6.10 or Equations 6.10a and 6.10b and Ψ2,1 for the main variable in accidental (fire) combinations. UNI EN (Italy): Uses equations 6.10a and 6.10b for action combinations and Ψ2,1 for the main variable in accidental (fire) combinations. SFS EN (Finland): Action combinations are based on equations 6.10a and 6.10b, including a consequence class option for determining partial safety coefficients, snow load psi factors depend on the user input snow load values, and Ψ2,1 for the main variable in accidental (fire) combinations. We’ll be sharing more about the Floor Calculator in the coming days, but if you’re curious, head over to CLT Toolbox and check it out. The Floor Calculator is free to use today! #masstimber #structuralengineering

We've made a comparison between between the current Eurocode, proposed Draft Eurocode & Supplier ETAs for laterally loaded screws. In CLT Toolbox, we enable all three methods when designing your screws. But what is the difference? Lateral Capacity of Screws - All methods are governed by six failure modes in Johanson’s equations. - Both EN 1995:2004 and prEN 1995:2023 calculate characteristic lateral capacities similarly, but supplier-specific ETAs may refine embedment strength calculations. Rope Effect Contribution - EN 1995:2004 and prEN 1995:2023 allow a rope effect of up to 25% of withdrawal capacity, effectively doubling lateral capacity under certain conditions. - ETAs provide specific withdrawal capacity equations for accurate application. Geometry Requirements - Both standards specify spacing, edge, and end distances based on nominal diameters. - prEN 1995:2023 introduces considerations for inclined screws, with edge and end distances measured from the screw’s center of gravity. - Supplier ETAs offer tailored recommendations for optimal geometry in unique scenarios. If you want to check out the differences in methods in your designs you can check them out in the CLT Toolbox app! #clttoolbox #structuraldesign #masstimber

When selecting a screw, there are things beyond the strength capacities that need to be considered. These include an understanding of head and thread type, material and applicable service class, tip type, specific application or notes about the screw from the supplier. Previously this information is best found through going through lots of PDF resources, catalogues and technical sheets from each supplier and then manually integrating it with the spreadsheets. Now, this information is at your fingertips when you perform your screw designs with the CLT Toolbox more information dropdowns. These screw calculators are free for the month of November – check them out on the app! #screwdesign #masstimber
