That's a wrap! 🌟 We've had an incredible few days at the Sustainable Dairy Alliance Fall Meeting and the Sustainable Agriculture Summit, and we couldn’t be more energised about the future of sustainable agriculture. The journey started with an insightful tour of the Cargill R&D facilities in Elk River. From there, we dove deep into the latest trends and challenges in the U.S. dairy industry led by Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy alongside some of the brightest minds in the field. At the Summit, the Number 8 bio team had the pleasure of welcoming countless visitors to our expo booth. The enthusiasm and curiosity about our solution for reducing enteric methane was palpable! We had meaningful conversations with farmers, suppliers, processors, retailers, academics, and more — all united by a shared mission to advance sustainability in agriculture. Of course, we also enjoyed an abundance of delicious cheese and produce — because what’s an ag event without tasting the best of what the industry has to offer? 🧀 A huge thank you to Angela Hessinger and the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy for organising such a great event. We leave the Summit buzzing with ideas and excitement, ready to collaborate and innovate for a more sustainable future. 🌍 #SustAg2024 #Sustainability #DairyInnovation #Agriculture

Last week, our VP of Business Operations, Britt Rinker, and Chief of Staff, Simone Barakat had an incredible time attending the Australian Lot Feeders' Association's #BeefEx2024 in Brisbane. With over 800 delegates, the event was a fantastic opportunity to dive deep into the future of grainfed beef. Here are a few highlights and takeaways: ✨ The 30th anniversary of the National Feedlot Accreditation Scheme was a major highlight. As Australia’s oldest agriculture-based quality assurance program, it continues to lead the way in transparency and quality. ALFA now represents over 90% of all cattle on feed, and grainfed beef accounts for 42% of the nation’s total beef production—a clear sign of the industry’s growth and impact. 🐮 ALFA President Barb Madden’s heartfelt words resonated with everyone: “We strive to do what is right for the cattle in our care every single day... our mantra is 'cattle come first.'” Reflecting the deep commitment lot feeders have to animal welfare and the continual improvement of the industry. 🌍 Nuffield Scholar Catherine Marriott OAM shared valuable insights from her research on international ESG efforts in the beef sector. She emphasised that sustainability isn’t optional, saying “ignore it at your own peril.” Catherine urged producers to understand their carbon footprint and stay ahead of global trends to remain competitive in an evolving market. If Ruminati's buzzing booth on the expo floor was any indication, producers are on the case. 🔬 Darryl Savage from The North Australian Pastoral Company shared his perspective on the strengths and risks facing the feedlot industry, calling feedlots the "testbed for innovation" in beef production. We couldn’t agree more with feedlots playing a key role in groundbreaking research for our own methane inhibitors. 📊 Our friends, Fran Cowley from University of New England (AU) and Sarah J. Meale from The University of Queensland, have been hard at work providing groundbreaking research on the effectiveness of emissions reducing feed additives in the paddock and improving Australian feedlot emissions calculations to ensure robust and accurate reporting. 👏 A big congratulations to the award winners at BeefEx 2024, including #GundamainFeedlot, Barmount Feedlot and Teys Australia's #CondamineFeedlot (just to name a few). Well deserved! 🤠 To top off an amazing event, we wrapped up with a fun Bucking Bull competition, raising funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities. There were plenty of laughs, especially when Britt took her turn on the mechanical bull! The future of Australia’s beef industry looks brighter than ever, and at Number 8 Bio, we’re excited to continue contributing to more sustainable solutions for reducing enteric methane and improving cattle health. 🐄💨 #BeefEx2024 #Sustainability #GrainfedBeef #MethaneReduction #FeedlotInnovation #ESG #Agribusiness #Number8Bio

Thanks so much, Elaine Watson and AgFunder, for the great write-up 💚 Our priority is to develop products that will provide a healthy ROI to producers, promote animal welfare, and help solve climate change through reduced emissions. We're very excited about the progress we're making with our novel inhibitor, a small organic molecule showing consistent methane reduction and increased animal productivity. Watch this space!
The most viable route to cost-effective production of feed supplements to reduce methane emissions from burping cows remains synthetic chemistry, not large-scale seaweed cultivation, plant extracts, or biomanufacturing, claims Sydney-based startup Number 8 Bio. “The thing that will be most successful in this market has to be very low cost and very high efficacy. And right now I don’t see how that can be achieved with anything that’s not a synthetic chemical,” says cofounder Dr. Thomas Williams, who originally focused on coaxing yeast cells to produce bromoform, a methane inhibitor found in red seaweed. Like fellow startup Volta Greentech, which has recently moved away from seaweed cultivation for livestock methane reduction, Number 8 bio has turned its attention to methane inhibitors that can be made far more cheaply via synthetic chemistry, says Williams. “We screened a whole bunch of things using our invitro rumen platform, as well as in live animals, and found a host of small molecules that inhibit methane production. "We’ve also been looking at a host of #prebiotics that promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the rumen that can outcompete the methanogens [microbes that produce methane in the animal’s stomach] and lead to the production of nutritious molecules such as volatile fatty acids.” That said, “My opinion is that several solutions will have to exist because farming is quite diverse,” says Williams. “So I don’t think it’s going to be a case of winner takes all.” #livestockmethanereduction #agtech #emissions #methane AgFunder #animalfeed
