Lady Lamington may have inspired the delicious chocolatey, coconutty goodness that is the lamington — but that wasn't her only claim to fame. 🤩 Born Annabella Elizabeth Mary Houghton Hozier, she married the second Baron Lamington in June 1895, shortly before his appointment as Queensland’s eighth Governor in April 1896. Lady Lamington quickly established a reputation as congenial and hard-working. Shortly after her marriage, she opened a new cookery school at the Brisbane Technical College and became patron of the Braille Society. She was also instrumental in establishing the Lady Lamington Hospital for the Diseases of Women and the Lady Lamington Nurses’ Home at the Brisbane General Hospital. 🏥 The Lady Lamington Hospital was part of the Brisbane General Hospital precinct in Herston, where the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital (RBWH) is now. The Lady Lamington Nurses' Home was the social epicentre of life as a resident nurse at the RBWH. Generations of nurses lived here during their years of training. These buildings are the oldest surviving nurses’ quarters in Queensland. Lady Lamington was so committed to her work that she trained with St John's as a nurse, and made time to volunteer at the general hospital. She did this all while raising her two children. After her time in Queensland, she served in the volunteer ambulance brigade in France during World War I. 🚑 In 1901, Lord and Lady Lamington left for Bombay, India where he served until 1907. On their retirement, the Lamingtons returned to Lanarkshire in Scotland. Lady Lamington died in 1944 at the age of 75, four years after her husband. She is remembered as 'a most loveable woman'. 🥰 ℹ️ Sources: State Library of Queensland, Metro North Health, QLD Governor (Facebook)

Meet Nurse Educator Trudie — a shining star behind training the oncology and palliative care teams at Ipswich Hospital! 🌟 Trudie plays a vital role in ensuring nurses are equipped with the latest knowledge and skills to deliver exceptional care. Her expert guidance and hands-on education help the teams excel in their specialised roles, providing the best support for every patient. 🥰 Oncology focuses on diagnosing and treating cancer, while palliative care aims to improve the quality of life for those with serious, life-limiting illnesses. By integrating the training between the two specialties, Trudie helps nurses provide compassionate care that prioritises comfort and wellbeing, especially when a cure is no longer possible. ‘I love being part of the journey that empowers our nurses to deliver the highest standard of care,’ Trudie said. ‘We focus on improving patients’ quality of life at every stage of their health journey, no matter what they’re facing.’ Some of Trudie's key responsibilities involves teaching nurses how to safely manage critical tasks, from inserting vascular devices (used to deliver drugs or antibiotics directly into the bloodstream) to safely handling toxic drugs like those used in chemotherapy. ‘Cytotoxic drugs are designed to target cancer cells, but they can be dangerous,' Trudie said. 'It’s my responsibility to ensure our teams know how to handle these drugs safely, protecting both themselves and their patients.’ As a Nurse Educator, Trudie is a leader in the hospital, guiding our nursing teams through complex cases and ensuring they are always prepared. ‘Oncology and Palliative Care are specialised fields, by integrating the two areas, we can better manage symptoms and focus on improving patients’ quality of life at every stage of their journey.’ A huge thank you to Trudie for her incredible work. Your dedication to patient care makes all the difference. 💙 Via West Moreton Hospital and Health Service ℹ Source: Cancer Council. What is oncology? #HealthHero

Listening, sharing knowledge, and making meaningful connections under a mango tree with the Primary Health Care Clinic (PHCC) team on Badu Island (in the Torres Strait) was a special experience for Nick. ✨ Project Director, Nick recently visited Badu Island to discuss the Building Rural and Remote Health Program and its benefits for the local clinic. Nick leads the delivery of planning, design, and construction for key health infrastructure projects across the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service, including the PHCC and the Cooktown Hospital Redevelopment. One of the things that stands out most for Nick when visiting remote communities is the warmth and openness of the people. 🥰 'They’re so excited to engage authentically and share their ideas for improving healthcare,' Nick said. Nick’s days are often dynamic, with early flights, community engagement, meetings with traditional owners, and evening forums. One of the highlights of his recent visit was the chance to hear from the clinical team in person. 'It was fantastic having the opportunity to engage with the team and hear about their daily challenges, as well as their ideas for the future to better serve the community closer to home,' Nick said. 'Their passion and commitment were truly inspiring.'
