As 2024 comes to a close, we’re reflecting on 80 years of Thiess’ legacy in the Hunter Valley, which began with open-cut operations at Muswellbrook Coal Mine in 1944. Today, Thiess Rehabilitation is proud to deliver technology-led post-mining land restoration at the Muswellbrook site, which is making significant progress. Thiess Rehabilitation offers mine rehabilitation services by miners, who are also environmental experts.
About us
Mining is about value, and that value isn’t fully realised until land is returned to a sustainable state. Thiess Rehabilitation offers world-leading mine rehabilitation services by miners, who are also environmental experts. Our team designs, develops and delivers tailored, strategic rehabilitation solutions with extensive flexibility in process and equipment. For many clients, that end-to-end capability is a powerful asset, supporting large-scale rehabilitation, including multi-site campaigns. For others, the benefit is in our ability to provide a smaller, specific service while knowing how it best fits in with a wider rehabilitation lifecycle. For some clients, there’s a notable advantage in our technical ability and experience in planning and optimising complex rehabilitation designs. And for others, the context may be simple, but the desire for expertise with competitive rigour remains. Whatever your context or goals, we ensure immediate and sustained value, with positive environmental, social and governance outcomes, so you can share the story of successfully restoring land.

I travelled to Perth a couple of days early this week for the Geomorphic Landform Design and Landscape Evolution Modelling workshop - well worth while! Having Jose Martin Duque, Harly Lacy, Chris Waygood, David Williams and Neeltje Slingerland in the same room sharing insights on landform design was a unique insight. And I got to play in a sand pit. This week Rhianna Goodwin and I from the Thiess Rehabilitation team will be attending the ACG Australian Centre for Geomechanics "Mine Closure Conference", please reach out to catch up.

Full circle: Thiess Rehabilitation restores Muswellbrook mined land 80 years after Thiess pioneered open-cut operations. In 1944, the Thiess Brothers broke ground on open-cut mining operations at Muswellbrook Coal Mine. Fast forward 80 years, and Thiess Rehabilitation is back in the Hunter Valley, delivering technology-led post-mining land restoration works for Idemitsu Australia Pty Ltd. Since mobilising in July 2023, the team has achieved remarkable milestones: ✅ Safely moved 7.3 million cubic metres of mined earth – enough to fill 1,500 Olympic-sized swimming pools ✅ Celebrated 479 days reportable incident-free as of October 2024 ✅ Completed six blasts on the highwall, shaping the final landform Over the next year, 156 hectares of land will be restored. The scope of work is vast: 2.8km of rock-lined drains, 19km of contour banks, and 16,000 tonnes of compost spreading will be delivered, all contributing to a final landform ready for life after mining. This work reflects what makes Thiess unique—our focus on delivering value to our clients while embracing change, fostering innovation, and building enduring partnerships. Thiess Rehabilitation Senior Mine Rehabilitation Advisor Isabel Hardy had a great time at International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC), especially participating in the NextGen Program. She explained the importance of mine rehabilitation, shared insights into her role, offered career advice for high school students, and engaged kids with interactive STEM activities. It was a wonderful opportunity to inspire the next generation and highlight sustainable mining practices.
