Director General at Airports Council International - ACI EUROPE

It was a pleasure to meet again yesterday with Abdulkadir URALOĞLU - Minister of Transport & Infrastructure of Türkiye to review the country’s achievements in developing air connectivity & global positioning - and also discuss the challenges ahead. These include: i) the need for a more liberal/open skies policy, ii) reflecting airports’ investment needs and inflation in their user charges, iii) setting the policy framework to move on as regards SAF. Being in Ankara was also the opportunity to meet Enes Çakmak, new DG of dhmi which operates no less than 50 airports and has the highest number of airports certified under Airport Carbon Accreditation - an achievement we celebrated with his team. On my way back today via Istanbul, I was hosted by Bloomberg HT with top anchor Pelin Yantur grilling me on our industry’s financials, traffic outlook, positive externalities, and climate action. https://shorturl.at/PKesO Many thanks to Selahattin Bilgen our Board member & CEO of iGA Istanbul Airport for being with me all along 🙏 - as well as to Gokhan Dolek, IAP | Nigar Şeyda Yılmaz and Oğuz Aydemir | ÖZGÜR UÇAR from dhmi for all their work and support.

Today our DG Olivier Jankovec had the privilege of meeting His Excellency Abdulkadir URALOĞLU, Minister for Transport and Infrastructure of Türkiye. The meeting in Ankara provided an excellent opportunity to discuss the remarkable growth of Turkish aviation. Key highlights of this expansion include: ✈ +24% growth in total air connectivity for Türkiye vs. 2019 levels ✈ iGA Istanbul Airport climbing to the top position in Europe for direct connectivity (vs. 5th rank pre-pandemic) ✈ Turkish airports and the air connectivity they enable contribute €47.2 billion to the country’s GDP and support close to 500,000 jobs. Lauding these achievements, DG Jankovec also highlighted several critical areas to address for ensuring the sustainable development of Türkiye’s air connectivity, alongside economic and global positioning benefits. ➡ Adopt open skies principles to allow more airlines to operate in Türkiye. ➡ Implement market-based airport charge regulations to account for inflation and support necessary investments. ➡ Improve integration between ATM (Air Traffic Management) and ground operations at airports. ➡ Accelerate adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) through clear mandates.
