  • 📢 👏 🌎 The 1st Joint Development Plan for Global Geodesy (the Plan) is now available on the United Nations Global Geodetic Centre of Excellence (UN-GGCE) website in six languages. A great success for the UN-GGCE and for the global geodetic community 👇

The 1st Joint Development Plan for Global Geodesy (the Plan) is now available on the UN-GGCE website in six languages. Ten years on from the adoption of UN General Assembly resolution 69/266, the purpose of the Plan is to translate the geodetic needs of Member States and partners into strategic objectives and activities, which, when achieved, will strengthen the global geodesy supply chain. ACCESS TO THE 1st JOINT DEVELOPMENT PLAN FOR GLOBAL GEODESY https://lnkd.in/drcw3YeY Available in: English | French | Spanish | Russian | Chinese | Arabic ACTION The Plan contains specific activities to be delivered by the UN-GGCE, Member States and Partners. Member States: You are encouraged to develop a country level working group with representatives from defence, science, policy, academia and industry, and work through the activities together. Partners: The UN-GGCE currently has 25 Partners (https://lnkd.in/euWyEMA4). I encourage our Partners to review the Plan and choose activities they will lead or assist with. Please email us at un-ggce@un.org and tell us which activities you will lead or assist with. The UN-GGCE will coordinate the inputs from Partners to ensure the delivery of activities. If you are not a Partner, but would like to be one, please find out more here (https://lnkd.in/dvTpGsBy). UN-GGCE: The UN-GGCE team will coordinate activities of the community and undertake actions of our own. The major initiatives we are undertaking at the moment include the five Geodesy Capacity Development workshops of 2025, three new policy briefs and the implementation of the Multilateral Memorandum of Understanding. At the upcoming Joint UN-GGIM Subcommittee on Geodesy and UN-GGCE International Advisory Committee meeting in Bonn (March 10-14), the Plan and implementation strategies will be discussed in more detail. CONSULTATION PROCESS  My sincere thanks to the well over 500 people from 110 countries who have been involved in the three-stage consultation process. Round 1 - open call for feedback which (finished on 10 July 2024). Round 2 - formal interventions from Member States and discussions at the 14th session of UN-GGIM (August 2024). Round 3 - online listening sessions in four different languages (October - November 2024). I look forward to working with you all to implement these activities and strengthen the global geodesy supply chain together. As always, please feel free to reach out to me to discuss the plan or implementation ideas. The UN-GGCE team are here to help you. Best regards, Nick

How better to start the year🕛 than with a new deliverable ⁉️ Following significant interest from the #AIS/#AIM community, the much-awaited EUROCONTROL Guidelines on Coordinate Reference Systems: Basic User Guide is finally here❗ 📦Published at the end of last year, the document📃 is now available on the EUROCONTROL ADQ website and can be obtained📥 from the following link🔗 https://lnkd.in/dAjnkTpS Developed as an informal guide through joint efforts🤝 of NGI - National Geographic Institute and EUROCONTROL, this guide📚 aims to clarify aspects of geodetic datums🌐, coordinate reference systems, and transformations between these systems🧭🗺️, targeting quality, regulatory and operational experts within #ANSPs and #AISPs as its primary audience. Questions such as What is #WGS84? How is it related to #ITRS? What is the difference between #WGS84 and #ETRS89? What steps are required to transform coordinates between these systems? are being left behind as we move forward with the 🔜further development of the document, focusing on incorporating other critical aspects relevant to civil #aviation. ✈️

Belgium prepares for future risks of wildfires California reminds us of the need to be prepared! 🔥 Following a suggestion from the Nationaal Crisiscentrum , Cerac - Climate Risk Assessment Center and NGI - Nationaal Geografisch Instituut are working hand in hand to assess the current and future risk of wildfires breaking out at large scale in Belgium, on the basis of available data and information. In this context, the expert consultations show that such a dramatic situation is currently unthinkable in our country. The effects of climate change are not yet strong enough for fires to break out and spread uncontrollably over large areas. However, according to some estimates, the conditions could be in place within the next 15 to 20 years, which should give decision-makers in general and society in particular enough time to prepare. The results of this assessment will be summarized in a report to be published by Cerac including next steps needed for more specific analysis. 🔥 Lessons learnt so far from California shows the devastating consequences of wildfires. As of January 2025, wildfires continue to pose a significant threat to this state, with the state experiencing an extended fire season due to climate change, including high winds, drought conditions and rising temperatures. The summer and autumn of 2024 saw numerous wildfires across California, particularly in the northern and central regions. Although the state has made significant advances in fire management, such as controlled burns and improved emergency response systems, the frequency and intensity of fires are increasing in this part of the world. Thousands of hectares have been burned and communities have faced evacuations and property damage. Air quality has been severely affected, particularly in urban areas, and the state's ecosystem faces long-term challenges from habitat loss and soil erosion. At the time of writing, firefighters and other state security agencies are still desperately battling the fires. #ClimateChange #Climaterisks #Wildfires Tracking Los Angeles area wildfires Five active fires in Los Angeles County have grown to more than 29,000 acre
