This week at the United Nations Global Geospatial Knowledge and Innovation Centre (#UNGGKIC), an expert consultation and meeting is focusing on discovering practical modalities to accelerate the implementation of the UN-IGIF at the country level. The five-day event 📅 is reviewing existing approaches, documents, guides, and resource materials, recognizing that geospatial information is essential for evidence-based policy development and informed decision-making. Coinciding with GIS Day, this consultation ensures that the UN-IGIF remains adaptable to dynamic national circumstances, emerging technologies, and innovative uses of geospatial information. Participants are emphasizing that the UN-IGIF must evolve with new national priorities, technologies, applications, and global development agendas for a more resilient and equitable world 🌏. This working meeting, or ‘meeting of the minds,’ brings together expert representatives from Cameroon, Indonesia, Panama, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and Tonga, along with resource persons experienced in supporting the preparation of national action plans and substantive officers from the Secretariat. About us
The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations established the Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) as the apex intergovernmental mechanism for making joint decisions and setting directions with regard to the production, availability and use of geospatial information within national, regional and global policy frameworks. Led by Member States of the United Nations, UN-GGIM aims to address global challenges regarding the use of geospatial information, including in the development agendas, and to serve as a body for global policymaking in the field of geospatial information management On 22 July 2022, ECOSOC welcomed and noted the report from the Committee of Experts (E/2022/68) and adopted resolution E/RES/2022/24 entitled "Enhancing global geospatial information management arrangements". The resolution acknowledges the achievements and progress made by the Committee of Experts in the area of global geospatial information management and its contribution to the strengthening of geospatial information management capacities and utilization in developing countries. The resolution reiterates the importance of strengthening and enhancing the effectiveness of the Committee, particularly for the achievement of its operations focused on the Sustainable Development Goals and the Integrated Geospatial Information Framework, to strengthen and ensure its continued effectiveness and benefit to all Member States. Further, the resolution updates and modifies the Terms of Reference for the Committee of Experts.

This week, the UN-GGIM Secretariat is convening a consultation workshop in 📍 Suva, Fiji with the Pacific Community-SPC, @Pacific Geospatial Surveying Council, and SDG Data Alliance. With national representatives from 11 Pacific SIDS, Australia, and national and regional partners, the Workshop ‘Identifying Problems, Finding Solutions’ is seeking to chart 🗺 a course for small islands 🏝 to enhance their national geospatial information arrangements, leveraging the UN-IGIF (#UNIGIF), to accelerate the implementation of the #SDGs and the newly adopted Antigua & Barbuda Agenda for SIDS (#ABAS). When identifying their many similar development and related capacity challenges participants recognized that the ABAS in listing concrete priorities and actions across 10 thematic areas, provides a high degree of mandate and action for the PGSC and Pacific #SIDS. This particularly relates to the thematic area ‘Improving #data collection, #analysis, and use’ in the following areas: 📈 Investing in States’ ability to ensure quality, accessible, timely and reliable, disaggregated data, according to national contexts 🌐 Strengthening and modernizing national #digital data infrastructure and systems 👩🔬 Enhancing science-based and #innovation for the collection, storage, analysis, disaggregation, dissemination and use of demographic data in SIDS, including the use of #geospatial technologies 🤝 Enhancing partnerships to facilitate peer-to-peer learning, including through the SIDS Centre of Excellence and existing statistical initiatives, including through regional organizations 🛰 Providing high-quality #spatial data, and working to downscale global datasets to provide accurate information for SIDS #unitednations #geospatial #sustainabledevelopment Meizyanne Hicks | Marika kalouniviti | Vaipo Mataora | Tony Kabasi | Peniasi Nakautoga | Richard Siataga | Nicholas Pion | telesia sila | Yumi Casualina Nafe | Faatasi Malologa | Tony Kanas | Viliami Folau | Sam Harper | Vani Koroisamanunu | @CheeHai Teo | Greg Scott | Andiswa Mlisa | Stuart Minchin | Charles Brigham | Adam Pfister

The Eighth meeting of the Expert Group on the Integration of Statistical and Geospatial Information (EGISGI), jointly with the seventh meeting of the Working Group on Geospatial Information (WGGI) of the IAEG-SDGs, is held this week, 17-19 September 2024, hosted by UN-Habitat at the United Nations Office in Nairobi, Kenya. Jointly chaired by Claudio Stenner, IBGE Brazil, co-Chair of EG-ISGI, and @Mary Smyth, CSO (Central Statistics Office Ireland) co-Chair of WGGI, the meeting discussed and advanced global to national issues on geo-statistical integration and the role of geography within the Sustainable Development Goals. The meeting considered many issues relevant to both groups, including national experiences in the implementation of the Global Statistical 📊Geospatial 🌍 Framework and the SDGs Geospatial Roadmap; agreeing on the need to advance guidance on the #disaggregation of #statistics by #geography and support the #localization of the #SDG; and discussed the many benefits of the United Nations Integrated Geospatial Information Framework #IGIF for the Statistical Domain. Both groups underscored how to enhance the role and use of geography and geospatial information to support countries in addressing national priorities and implementing the SDGs, and called for the implementation of the Global Statistical Geospatial Framework by National Statistical Offices and National Geospatial Information Agencies for the opportunities afforded by integrated statistical and geospatial information to be fully realized. During the meeting, Olivia Powell, Office of National Statistics, United Kingdom, was introduced as the new Co-Chair of the Expert Group on the Integration of Statistical and Geospatial Information, joining Claudio Stenner, the current Co-Chair.
