What an incredible week at #COP29!   As #COP29 unfolded — marked by a mix of successes and notable challenges (Read our analysis here: https://shorturl.at/pJ7R3) — Regions4 remains inspired and energized by the incredible collaboration, bold commitments, and innovative solutions shared throughout the two weeks! We closed this year’s climate summit on a high note, bringing together 18 regional governments to drive urgent climate action and push for increased climate finance. Over the week, we held 21 strategic meetings with members, partners and donors, we co-hosted 5 high-level events with partners including Scotland, Lombardy, the Catalan Government, MAIA and INBOA, and we supported 20 partner events to amplify regional voices on the global stage.    Our highlights:   1️⃣ We launched the #RegionsAdapt Progress Report 2024, where we share a collection of 12 inspiring stories from our members of climate action and biodiversity leadership: https://shorturl.at/DLQL5     2️⃣ Scotland announced a £40,000 Just Resilience Fund to support vulnerable communities in the Global South through @Regions4, continuing its leadership and commitment to climate justice worldwide. 3️⃣ Rio de Janeiro joined as a founding member of ‘Regions4SDGs,’ our partnership with @UNHABITAT to fast-track the SDGs at the regional level. 4️⃣ Andalusia  has officially joined #RegionsAdapt and the UN Race to Resilience, alongside Assam, Pernambuco, and Louga, bringing the total membership to 82 regions worldwide. 5️⃣ We renewed our partnership with the European Committee of the Regions to amplify local leadership on climate and resilience for 2025-2026. Now, it’s time to turn these commitments into action, ensuring that no community is left behind in the fight for a sustainable and resilient future. Solidarity is good, justice is better. ⚠️ The latest United Nations reports are clear: countries are far from the deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions mandated by science and we are currently heading for a catastrophic temperature rise of up to 3.1°C. Every fraction of a degree counts as climate disasters continue to escalate throughout the world. Adapting to climate change can no longer be an afterthought.  The next round of climate plans that countries must present next year are our LAST chance to keep the 1.5º alive and must reflect a dramatic increase in climate action and ambition. In this context, COP29 must deliver concrete, ambitious outcomes on climate #finance, particularly addressing the needs of those less responsible for the climate crisis and most impacted by it.  💡Yes, the shadow of Trump’s election was felt at COP29 Azerbaijan, but also reasons for #hope: when national governments fall short, subnational governments will continue to step up with their ambition, knowledge and proximity to support their #communities. It was truly inspiring to witness this from regions around the world like Andalusia, Assam State, California, Catalonia, CONGOPE, Cross River State, Flanders, Gauteng, Gossas, Jalisco, Kenya, Lombardy, Minas Gerais, Pernambuco, Québec, Rio de Janeiro, São Paolo, Scotland, South Australia, Sud Comoé, Yucatán👏. Subnational governments represent millions of citizens around the world🌎 and can implement up to 70% of climate mitigation measures and up to 90% of adaptation policies. In the face of climate disasters, cities and #regions are the first impacted and the first to respond. Making #climatefinance directly accessible to subnational governments is crucial to reach the most vulnerable and drive solutions tailored to the specific needs and realities of impacted territories! 💡 To push for #climatefinance action and amplify regional voices on global stage, we joined forces with Scotland, Lombardy, Catalonia, São Paulo, and EU Mission Adaptation project MAIA, and co-hosted five high-level events showcasing concrete examples of bold regional leadership.    🤝 I’m also deeply grateful to Scotland, Regions4 Presidency, announcing a £40,000 Just Resilience Fund through Regions4 to support vulnerable communities in the #GlobalSouth. 🍃˚#Nature must be at the heart of climate policies and action. The launch of the #RegionsAdapt Progress Report 2024, with inspirational climate and nature stories from 40 regions in 16 counties, are proof of the change regions are making on the ground. Regions are innovation hubs and are showing ambition in financing, cooperation solidarity and #justice. 🟢 Gossas, in Senegal, has dedicated 23% of its land to protected areas, becoming a leader in biodiversity protection in #Senegal. Through forest regeneration projects and the creation of village woodlands, Gossas is building natural barriers against desertification.  In addition to conservation actions, Gossas has implemented a climate monitoring system that provides local communities with real-time weather information! The twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss are amongst the biggest global challenges of our time. In this decisive decade for climate action, the Scottish Government is committed to working with, supporting, and learning from our international partners to help secure a global transition to a net zero and climate resilient future in a way that is fair and just for all. We are committed to being a bridge builder, to amplifying the voices of the global south, and addressing the unequal impacts of climate change on marginalised people, especially young people and women. At #COP29 in Azerbaijan, Acting Net Zero Secretary Gillian Martin held a roundtable with youth climate leaders from the Global South and hosted a panel discussion on climate justice. These highlighted the important role of subnational governments in addressing loss and damage and inspiring others to take actions, and the importance of empowering young people who are often hit hardest by the impacts of climate change

🔵On #COP29 Youth Day, we’re celebrating the incredible drive of Assam’s youth in building climate-resilient communities. Through the Chief Minister’s Climate Resilient Village Fellowship, 47 young leaders in Assam, India, are stepping up to protect and transform #rural communities against climate impacts💡 This Fellowship not only equips future leaders with the skills to tackle climate challenges but also empowers Assam’s rural communities to strengthen their livelihoods and #resilience. By focusing on innovation, education, and community engagement, Assam is paving the way for a sustainable future.  Through in-depth research, these young leaders are implementing climate-smart agriculture, sustainable water management, and renewable energy solutions. 📢 Announcement! Cross River State, in Nigeria, partnered with Oando Plc to launch major green projects, promoted by Stratus Consult. Inspired by #COP28, these initiatives aim to cut emissions, create jobs, and provide clean energy: 🌬️ 50MW capacity wind farm projects to produce clean, renewable energy. 🚗 A new electric vehicle (EV) assembly plant to drive innovation and sustainability. 🚖 The state government will deploy electric 2-3 wheelers, minibuses, and cars for commercial transport. Last month, Cross River State passed the Climate Change and Green Economy Bills into law, establishing the legal framework for achieving the state's climate-resilient development goals and for creating a Council on Climate Change.
